Congrats! I hope you enjoy your 2002 as much as I'm enjoying my 2002!
  2. Re: two frets sound the same/newbie restringing problems

Regarding replacing strings, if you can't find a local store online stores such as JustStrings.com carry mandolin string sets as well as individual strings. Various types of D'Addario strings are...
  3. Re: Talk me out of replacing an ABS nut with a bone nut

I'd say, like so many other setup related items, what else changed besides the nut? Were the string grooves changed in any way? Was action changed? Was bridge tilt or location changed? Were the...
  4. Re: Open Back / Old Time Banjos - Comparisons to Mando Builders

If it were me, I'd be in the market for a 1920s Vega Whyte Laydie or Tubaphone openback. Might be lucky enough to find an original 5 string, or otherwise would want a custom 5-string neck, which...

    Re: Tremolo

It's going to be different for everyone's hands, but in my case I was holding the pick in a very unnatural way which was not allowing me to adjust the angle of the pick. I didn't realize it until I...

    Re: Tailpieces

I compared the weight of my stamped Gibson tailpiece with my James tailpiece by hand before I installed it. I was surprised that the weights are extremely close, almost no perceivable difference. ...

Re: Morris A4 Has A Surprising Flaw

Also looks like some of the finish might have adhered to the bottom of the bridge and come up with the bridge. Check the bottom of the G&D bridge foot, is there finish there?

    That doesn't mean...

Re: James tailpiece on a Northfield F5S?

If I had needed to drill completely new holes for my James, I would have left the original holes unplugged, since they would be hidden anyway, plus they would be available for any future owner who...

Re: How to enhance mando for legato piece

Interesting thread; I use tremolo combined with double/triple stops a lot, probably more than normal bluegrass players, but I play chord melody style most of the time for roots music including...

Re: Big Mandolin With Banjo Tuning

One of the reasons I'm so happy about the way my mandolin tuning is working out is that I have an old plectrum banjo in the wings waiting for me to decide my flatpicking is up to snuff enough to...

Re: James tailpiece on a Northfield F5S?

You might get some of these answers directly from Bill James himself if you contact him through his Axiom Inc website ( http://www.axinc.net/ ). He was very helpful when I contacted him there.

    Re: Aluminum tuner button question

All I can tell you, related to the aluminum instruments that I have, is that older aluminum alloys are very soft compared to today's aluminum, so you'll want to be extremely careful to avoid melting...
  15. Re: Grass Valley Fathers' Day Bluegrass Festival (CBA)...

Probably worth mentioning, this year's Grass Valley Fathers' Day Bluegrass Festival has been postponed to 2021.

We'll miss seeing everyone there. Be safe, hope to see you all in 2021!

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

In the case of my main playing banjo, recently refretted with Evo, this is an extremely loud banjo that amplifies every sound (including technique if I'm not careful). When I had the refret done I...

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

Somewhere along the line I've gotten the impression that Evo frets are lighter in weight than nickle-silver. Might be because Evo frets are supposedly made of the same material used for modern metal...

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

I know for sure Austin Clark (out of Boise, Idaho) uses Evo, possibly among other choices. He did the Evo re-fret work on my mando, my banjo and my wife's guitar.

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

I of course went the first (other) direction => to Evo, and so far I wouldn't change anything. My wife and I also had her guitar and my main playing banjo re-fretted to Evo after my mandolin...

  24. Re: My Mandolin satisfaction maybe related to the cost
