    Re: Phoenix Bluegrass #429

I've got #539, purchased new from Rolfe in 2011. I had a pick guard added. It's a thing of beauty.

    Re: Black-Eyed Susie

I was listening to a random bit of bluegrass and couldn't get the exact title, nor the artist. But I just heard a very similar song to "Black Eyed Susie" which sounded like it might be "Black Foot...

Re: An open letter to Classifieds users

I'll say that I think this is well worded. I'm about to place my ever classified ad(s) and I hadn't yet read about the optional 2% contribution back to the site. I think it's a fine idea and should...

Re: Should I get a capo?

You could certainly have a mandolin built without frets. There are fretless guitars, banjos and basses. Violin has no frets. But the overall purpose of the fret and the purpose of the capo are the...

Re: Should I get a capo?

I think perhaps you're missing my point. Full disclosure, I don't use a capo on my mandolin, likely never will. But as far as I'm concerned, the capo is a tool and the frets are tools as well. But...

Re: Should I get a capo?

It continues to be awesome, thanks for asking. Rolfe couldn't be there this year because he was ill. We talked about getting a group Phoenix picture together to send to him but I couldn't pull it...
  8. Re: Mandolin Cases: Likes, Dislikes, Wishes, Imagination

To me, the amusing thing is people WERE getting FF miles for their instruments.
  9. Re: Mandolin Cases: Likes, Dislikes, Wishes, Imagination

There's usually enough people wanting to store small bags, jackets, hats, etc which they can toss on top of my HSC which has the added benefit of preventing the case from flopping around in the OHC.

I'm not sure I'm following, but that's okay.

  12. Re: Mandolin Cases: Likes, Dislikes, Wishes, Imagination

Really? I've never had a problem even on full/small planes. Although I was getting on one smaller plane and a guy was trying to get a french horn into the overhead compartment. That was a game of...

Re: Phoenix mandolins & pegasus cases

I know this thread is old, what was the final verdict?
  15. Re: Mandolin Cases: Likes, Dislikes, Wishes, Imagination

I have a Hiscox case for my Phoenix mandolin. Since the mandolin is oddly shaped, it doesn't really fit into a F-style or A-style case quite right. They do fit into F-style cases but it's a bit tight...
  16. Re: Mandolin Cases: Likes, Dislikes, Wishes, Imagination

I've been thinking for about a year now that it would be great to have a case with a built in laptop/tablet sleeve. I was traveling and mandolin is an instrument you can easily get on the plane. And...

Re: Quick Fix for an e string high fret?

    There's a few suggestions here:

    http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/archive/index.php?t-300761.html

Applies to guitar but probably true for mandolin as well.

The only way I personally know...

Re: Should I get a capo?

So, how is "having to" use a capo somehow different than "having to" use the markers? What makes one crutch okay and the other crutch not?

Re: Should I get a capo?

At that point, wouldn't it just make sense to tune all four strings up a half step for the duration of the song?

What my father taught me about buying any musical instrument is if you buy a cheap one, it's probably going to be uncomfortable to play, the sound will be bad, you won't have fun, and you'll quit...

Re: Down to three models, which would you choose?

Having now seen the previous thread you started in, I can personally vouch for Janet Davis Music and The Music Emporium knowing the owners of both. TME is maybe 20 minutes from me.
