What? Can you post an example of something played in this tuning?

    Re: Five String Madness

B to Gb might not be a 5th, but Cb to Gb sure is.
  4. Re: Open right hand to closed fist transition help

I thought that as long as I didn't plant everything would be great, but I am noticing a big improvement with the fingers curled both in tone and fluidity. Curled vs open and lighly brushing the top....

    Re: Key of Bb

And another way to explain it...there’s only one of each letter name in a scale in diatonic western music.

    For example in the key of B, it would be B C# D# E....Not B C# Eb E..

    Re: Key of Bb

Any number of artificial dominants, yes. In bluegrass probably triads, anything else they would usually be at least 7th chords, and often altered or even subbed. Bass players think of them as just...

    Re: Key of Bb

It's also useful to think of the functions of the chords. Of course the I is tonic, a resolved sound with no tendency to move. The iii and vi chords can also function as tonic. The IV chord functions...

    Re: Sturgill Simpson Bluegrass Album

For a while he was doing shows with more of an R&B slant, with a horn section and STAX/Muscle Shoals feel. I don't know if he recorded anything like that. He is a creative force.

    I try to be...

Re: Alternate Reality Fender Tenor Tele

You could say the same of any guitar, I guess. How many versions of the Les Paul are there, even without custom modifications? Someone changes the bridge saddles and it's no longer a Les Paul? That...

    Re: Mandolin to DADGAD

I don't know, but it seems like unless you want to concentrate strictly on irish trad it's kind of limited.

I've recently started messing with guitar more, and have gone in exactly the opposite...

    Re: Wrist Tendonitis?

I agree with everyone that you should see a doctor, hopefully the one you mention who understands musicians. Let them check you out, could be many things.

    Re: Wrist Tendonitis?

Electric bass is notoriously hard on the right wrist. Assuming that's the cause of your tendinitis, try to keep the wrist as straight as possible. People have problems when they rest the forearm on...

    Re: Don Stiernberg Quartet "Nectarine"

I hope it's appropriate to mention this, but if not I hope a moderator will remove it.

Andy Brown, the fine guitarist we often see with Don Stiernberg, has released a solo guitar CD that is as...

    Re: Monel strings

Are there any long-time users of monel wrapped strings here? I've found that i prefer the sound of monel over phosphor/bronze. It seems slightly warmer, less zingy.

    Monel is very hard though,...

    Re: impulse purchase - non-mando

I think that might be more true if your main exposure to bass players is in bluegrass, where the role is limited. In other styles, jazz especially, bass is if anything often the most difficult...
