    Re: Who's played a Loar?

I just saw an advertisement of a Red Diamond mandolin with the April, 25th 1923 Loar signed F5 "voicing". It is listed for $14,500. Can anyone help me understand, if an original, genuine April 25th...

    Re: Who's played a Loar?

Red Diamonds are pretty rare too Fred. I took three Loars and two mid 20s Fern to MacRostie to study by measurement and flexibility factors to help him get as close as he has to the Loars. He...

This discussion is missing some defining points. Not to delve deeply, because most folks have their minds made up from factors that are personal to their needs. It is wonderful that so many great...

    Re: 1923 Fern Loar F5

Darryl, your knowledge of detail never ceases to amaze me. I am reminded of the time you told me the year of my D18 from a picture you saw of me holding it. I am very familiar with 72210, and play it...

    Re: Unsigned Lloyd Loar mandolins

The FON of 81250 is listed as unknown, but it is 11985 as one might expect. Just wanted to make it official. I took the first seven or eight pics shown of 82369. The first and second were intended to...

    Re: 81489 f5

This might explain the F7. A big stock pile of F4 mahogany necks and F5 type bodies laying around, then a weird marriage.

    Re: Unsigned Lloyd Loar mandolins

One thought on the finish question- You see a fair number of the mid 20s Ferns with lacquer spayed on the labels. This may have been due to the policy Gibson had of letting someone try an instrument...

    Re: Unsigned Lloyd Loar mandolins

There is a very tangible difference between Loars and early Ferns, from a playing perspective. The unsigned Loars are Loars. When you say Loar, it's means a lot more than just the signature.

Re: Bobby Osborne and his '24 Loar

I have to agree that Bobby's Fern is amazing, one of the best mandolins I have ever played. I have played two other Ferns that sounded about the same, one being Earl Taylor's. The other one I owned...

    Re: Danny Robert's Loar, Amazing.

I heard danny playing his Loar at Gettysburg last year, and it is an incredible mandolin. Of course, in his hands it reaches it's full potential. He connects with it.

When was Bob Applebaum ever their mandolin player? It almost sounds like someone has the bands mixed up in their minds? I can't picture this scenario.
