  1. Re: glue for temporary attachment of copper inlay

+1 for Duco. Then flood it with acetone to release it.

Re: Steve Earl and his Gibson mandolins

Never knew about the burnt cow bone for the black pigment. Glad I wasn't around. Just sawing it is bad enough.

Re: George Gruhn with his favorite guitar

After staring at every feature for the entire video the only thing that would be an asthetic improvement to me would have been worm over gears so the knobs would be more centered in the peghead. Of...

Super Champ XD's. Found the second one used. One is for loop rhythm and other for lead. 25.5 scale.

Then and now. I'm making a completely different noise in there now. There's my exhaust fan on the bench I'm hoping someone on Craigslist will want.

Re: New Vessel Loar A5 tribute

Another question is are you taking business away from Gibson. I say no since Gibson doesn't now nor have they ever except for one time offered an instrument like this. Only a handful of customers are...

Re: New Vessel Loar A5 tribute

Gibson wasn't competing with anyone about what the scroll looked like. I've pointed out before that IMO the teen ovals usually had much better scrolls. I think workmanship in those days was overall a...

Re: New Vessel Loar A5 tribute

If everyone did put "The Gibson" on their mandolins you could always tell the authentic ones because they would be the ones that didn't look right.

Re: Schaller Grand Tune Tuning Keys

I got a complimentary set and put them on my personal mandolin but later changed back to the Grovers.

    Winfield Cancelled

Haven't seen it posted so I'll do it. Just saw the notice that Winfield is off. If you bought tickets they're good for next year.

Re: F5 with an OVAL hole?

This is the only oval I ever made. It was at the request by someone who had bought a couple of other F-5's. It required moving the oval forward a bit. I haven't heard it in years but it had a...

The worms on the handle shaft are cut either /// or \\\.
  14. Re: Stew mac -- waverly f-style mandolin tuners

I went back and checked the photo's of the 2 instruments I made with Waverly's which were several years apart and I think I had one set of each, the deep engraving and more shallow. I never noticed.
  15. Re: Stew mac -- waverly f-style mandolin tuners

What did they mean by hand engraved? It would at least had to have been a panograph engraver, not some guy chiseling away wouldn't it?
  16. Re: Stew mac -- waverly f-style mandolin tuners

If they went from hand engraved to CNC you might expect to see a price drop. But probably not.
  17. Re: Stew mac -- waverly f-style mandolin tuners

I only used Waverly's twice. I had a problem with the bushings being inconsistent, one would be tight while another in the same hole would have slop. Otherwise they were first rate. And they should...

    Re: Time to build?

I found when I told someone I made mandolins or showed them one almost always the first question was "how long does it take?" to which my stock answer was "too long".

This is a Hubble photo in National Geo. Don't know what the real name is but to me it's the F-5 galaxy.

    Re: Vintage Guitar Mag How-to

Is slippery bridge a common problem? Being mandolin centric I've never heard of it. I guess if you had a Bigsby but if the base is fitted correctly it's hard to imagine it would be a problem.

    Vintage Guitar Mag How-to

Has anyone ever seen this before? This is in a how-to column in a pretty mainstream publication. I thought it must have been the April addition but it's June.

Re: Gibson F5's from the 70's

William, you (and I) are from the time when re-graduating a later Gibson was nearly the only way of getting a decent sounding mandolin. I just don't see why anyone would do that now.
