    Re: Refretting

I assume you are getting the same Stewmac messages that I get but if not they are having a sale on tools, I think it was 15% off on fret tools.

Re: No makers marks on this one.

A whole lot of makers used that open book headstock shape. The fact that Gibson can claim it to me is pretty laughable but they have.

I'm still waiting for one of the bowl guys to pop out a catalog picture.

    Re: Double Standard

I never even thought about where that came from. It appears there are other explanations including a football explanation. None of them sounded real compelling to me so you're on your own.

    Re: Double Standard

It really has nothing to do with you David or your concession. The process was started and people think this was some sort of admonishment and I just got a PM about it, so let me say this. I really...

    Re: Double Standard

Since we are going to discuss the double standard, let's look at this line in the OP.

Here's a screen shot of the first answers. I don't see the admonishments. Could someone point them out to...
  7. Re: Converting 8-stringed guitars to mando cellos

You might want to check out your DNS cache, it takes me right to the unavailable Roger McGuinn Martin on the Musician's Friend site. Then again it might be blocked outside the US but I can't imagine...

    Re: Double Standard

You can make it even more exact by entering the words you want to search on and adding site:mandolincafe.com to the search string. An example would be:

    Re: Dampit tube humidifier

This article from Frank Ford's www.frets.com details problems when vinyl hits lacquer. Unfortunately we rarely know what's actually in the things we buy. I'm pretty sure there are a whole lot of...

Re: Ready built electric mandolin necks?

Not really, a neck is a neck. It takes X amount of wood(s), shaping, drilling fretting. Not so different really is it? It only becomes esoteric when we think that it is. If you fantasize that your...

    Re: This Gibson legit?

You can approximate the sound of a guitar played high on the fretboard on these 6-stringed mandolin shaped objects as well. :)
  13. Re: Converting 8-stringed guitars to mando cellos

A few years ago Taylor brought out an 8-string Baritone guitar. Alvarez has recently brought one out as well. There's a link to a video that shows the Alvarez in Message 7 above. Taylor's Baritone 8...

    Re: Double Standard

I generally don't even answer these but let me try to add some perspective. "What's the best mandolin for me to buy", What's the best strap", "What's the best pick", "What's the best case" etc....

Re: Ready built electric mandolin necks?

Look at the price of a Tele or Strat neck. They are sold all over the Internet. If your quality is anywhere near that you should get an idea.

Post a picture of the bowl from the back and side. Many of our expert bowlheads have been able to narrow things down a bit with those details. Everyone used butterfly and the other trim items were...

One thing that I can say after watching this conversation over the last several years is that generally the sound post on a mandolin seems to work best when the top has collapsed and there is no...

    Re: sound post experiment

Over the years it has been discussed many times. The mandolin and the violin top and back operated differently. While you're waiting for some answers take a look though these threads.

If anyone is interested in these guitar mandolins they should look at Barney Kessel's 12-string Gibson guitar mandolin.

    Re: This Gibson legit?

Yup. Now for the bad part. It's darn near impossible to make those shapes in the allotted space half the time, at least it was for me. Not real easy to play. Again YMMV.

The six-string mandolin shaped object is tuned like a guitar an octave up if I recall.

    Re: This Gibson legit?

I've never seen one in blue but that doesn't mean it didn't come from the factory that color, it just means I never saw one in blue. Goldtone made a G-6 as well that was much cheaper than this. A...
