Re: Flat Wound Strings = Noisy Mandolin

Bill, there was an error on my part. They are .26, not .20.

From what I gather, the physical properties of the flat wound strings are different to the extent that it caused the noise problems. ...

    Re: Compressor?

Someone gave me a Behringer compressor some time ago and I gotta tell you, all those controls are very daunting. The manual didn't help much,

Re: Flat Wound Strings = Noisy Mandolin

Don, I believe Breedlove recommended D'As on both of my Breedloves when I first bought them. Mine were made in Bend, OR, and neither are made any longer (or even in this country). While both of my...

The G strings were not a problem; only the other three sets

This may be moot since I 86'd the strings with no intention of...

Re: Flat Wound Strings = Noisy Mandolin

Jeff, this wasn't just different tone, it was no tone. The accompanying vibration against the frets was more than I could take. I did notice that if I moved my fingers around between the frets I...

Flat Wound Strings = Noisy Mandolin

Last week, I changed strings on one of my Breedloves. It's the American-made Legacy FF, about 8-9 years old. I put on a set of flat wound strings to try them out. Never again.

    I couldn't get a...

    Re: Grommets

Just for the heck of it, I went on eBay looking for the grommets. They were anywhere from 24 to 75 each. I mostly use leather shoestrings but the grommets I have were a nickel apiece at my...

Yeah, that's a problem with them. Leather lacing won't do that. Actually, I use both but the leather is less of a hassle.

    Re: Lightweight Octave Mandolin Cases

Cases for octaves are virtually non-existent. When Eddie Blevins built my f-style octave, we looked around but found nothing. For protection's sake, I didn't want a gig bag. I had a case custom...

Re: Removing LR Baggs Radius and Reinstalling

VHB looks like it's industrial strength and might be a bit of an overkill.

Now, I can only blame you guys because you brought the subject up. As I said earlier, I have an L R Baggs on my Gibson. ...

Re: Removing LR Baggs Radius and Reinstalling

I've had an L R Baggs on my Gibson for several years now. Every 6 or 8 months or so, I'll remove it for a D&C (dustin' and cleanin'). I've used the same "putty" all those years. Further, when it's...

Re: Why so many glossy finish mandos?

I diversify. My Gibson is glossy and silver. My Breedloves are matte and gold. And, my Blevins custom octave is Tru-Oil and gold.

I'm like Yankees1, though. I kinda like glossy and gold.

Before you liberate your ToneRite, try it between the bridge and tailpiece. That's the way I did it with my octave and it worked great.

A small edge touching the instrument is all that's necessary. Like Philphool indicated, anything more is going to act upon the vibrating surface and will likely affect the quality of sound.
