  1. Re: Advice needed for complement to my Weber Gallatin F Mandolin

Well there's no right or wrong way to expand your mando collection. The heart wants what it wants :).

But here we are all in some form of lockdown, so I'll play!

    You like your Gallatin and...

Re: Help: Looking To Buy My First Mandolin

It's probably worth researching whether you want a flat top or a carved top and an oval or F hole. There are always subtle differences between mandos but flat vs carved and F vs oval are not so...
  4. Re: String preferences for Collings MTO oval mandolins?

    I'll look at the Monels.

Right now I have Mangan bluegrass phosphor bronze on my MT2-0. I think they sound fine but I can't really tell the difference from the J74 phosphor bronze I had on before...

  7. Re: String preferences for Collings MTO oval mandolins?

Has anyone tried the D'Addario nickel bronze on the MTO? I have a spare set but not quite time for a string change yet.

Re: Nyberg Flattop Mandolin Build Thread

Looking good. I think Cedar and walnut will be a nice combination. I really like wood bindings!

    Re: Trillium longscale mandola demo

    Thanks TM.
It's a beautiful versatile instrument! I'm pretty bad at keeping mandolin family instruments but this one stays :)

Re: Mandolin armrests - Yes, No, Type?

It really depends on how you hold the mandolin. If you steady the mando with your forearm you might find it's more comfortable to have an armrest.

I think it also puts your wrist in a slightly...

    Re: Trillium longscale mandola demo

    Thanks Jim

It's a really nice hybrid instrument. Great for accompaniment, solo chord melody (drone sort of stuff), and small enough scale to play leads to speed. The body is basically a bouzouki...
  12. Any experience with Anthology Gear cases?

Expensive but they look pretty nice. Says it fits a uke or small bodied mandolin but no dimensions on the site.

Anyone have any experience with these cases?

Re: Speed of bluegrass... is it just me?

    Good conversation!

I think you can find the kind of BG you want to listen to and to play. It's all out there.

I guess I would add that a set list can define slow or fast too. If you play a...

Re: ? about Dunlop Primetone picks...

The grippy vs non-grippy are really different animals. They produce very different sounds. 1.3-1.5 would all be considered moderately heavy picks. After some experimentation you might find a...

  16. Re: NMD Collings MT2-0 (Pictures and a Christmas Tune)

That is the question. I have all the mando I'll ever need...but I still check the classifieds every day :)

    Re: RIP Tony Rice

I have great memories of Rice, Rowan, Gilchrist, and Davies at the Cedar in Minneapolis. One of the greatest groups I've ever seen. Each added something amazing.

As much as I love amber/blonde/natural instruments (and obviously I do) I also love sheraton brown. Look at this gorgeous Shippey Axe(which sadly, I don't own):

    Thanks Frankdolin.

I'm digging oval hole mandos and I'm definitely watching the tunes you put up with your beautiful Pava. It sounds and looks great!
  22. Re: NMD Collings MT2-0 (Pictures and a Christmas Tune)

They both look amazing! That said you get Varnish finish, Waverly tuners, a bound pickguard, and that beautiful upgraded (and no longer made) Collings case with the MT2V. Well worth the $900 bucks...

  24. Re: NMD Collings MT2-0 (Pictures and a Christmas Tune)

I haven't actually seen the MT-2V at Willies American Guitars in person. Just over the web. Certainly looks like all the mando anyone would ever need!
  25. Re: NMD Collings MT2-0 (Pictures and a Christmas Tune)

I think so too. Collings just seems to have an inexhaustible stash of killer maple.
