  1. Re: To the multi instrumentalists: which instrument is your no. 1

My first instrument was piano from about until about 12, then guitar until college when a friend lent me a mandolin and I had to have one of those. Then I got a fiddle and took some group lessons...
  2. Re: Review: Carlo Mazzaccara Lucia bowlback mandolin

Excellent. I would love to see this beauty one day.
  3. Re: Review: Carlo Mazzaccara Lucia bowlback mandolin

The other question I meant to ask: what were the changes to the standard model you asked Carlo to change? I am just curious.
  4. Re: Review: Carlo Mazzaccara Lucia bowlback mandolin

    Yes, looking good. Beautiful photos.

    A few questions:

You said you explored some vintage bowlbacks. Were you able to actually play some Emberghers, Calaces and Vinaccias or others of the most...
  5. Re: Resonance of a fiddle vs mandolins (wow)

Maybe this is also very obvious but one advantage I find playing fiddle vs. mandolin in a jam session is that the fiddle is played much closer to the ears than a mandolin. So add that to the mix...
  6. Re: Review: Carlo Mazzaccara Lucia bowlback mandolin

Tim Logan: I don't think any of your photos show up, at least I can't see them.

OTOH we can go to Carlo's site. You can see the Lucia model here. He says there are also available in the US at...

    Re: Solo builders

Br1ck, so you have lots of mandolins that will give you the volume you want so you will accept a quieter mandolin if it has the tone you like.

Re: How thick of a pick?

I have evolved through various BC's over time. Started with a thinner LG Jazz 40 and went through some rounded triangles like TPR60 and realized that I preferred a slightly more pointed and a hair...

Yes, but remember that the OP asked a question about acquiring a new mandolin. Oops! You were the OP! Hah! Are you just talking to your self? :)

    Re: Blue Chips

Maybe BC needs to offer a tracing chip embedded into each one and a Find Your BC app. They could call it the e-Blue Chip pick. :)

    Re: Recommendations for Custom Tailpiece

I agree and if there are no additional holes you can be fairly certain that it was the original tailpiece. In the meantime, does it play with that tailpiece?

I either keep mine in the strings of my mandolin or in my accessory case in a Altoids mini tin. Works for me. I...

Re: NMC, a great experience today

When I first started playing fiddle I lived in New York City. 57th Street near Carnegie Hall was the center for violin shops. One day I needed some set up or a bow rehaired and walked into and out of...

Re: Why keys of B and B flat?

Lots of soundfiles from mostly OT players. Seems like there are 125 Bb tunes linked on this great site.

Here's Casey's Hornpipe, one that I am working on in Bb. I hope to get it up to speed,...

Re: keeping the mando off your stomach

Why is that controversial? No one is forcing you to buy one. Neither are they forcing you to buy a brown piece of plastic for $35. So what is the problem?

Re: keeping the mando off your stomach

Why are they controversial? Anyone who wants to use one should do so or if you don't, then don't. Who cares what others say.

I have one and the only reason I rarely used it was because it didn't...
