Re: thin sounding treble strings on Collings?

You might check out Mapes Strings. You can order the specific string gauge for each course.

    Re: Buckeye / private builders

Pete Hart ((Buckeye) is still building. I communicated with him via email recently. His email address is hartwoodside@aol.com.

Re: Any experience with Mapes strings?

I have used them on mando and guitar, and like them a lot. Good tone (comparable to or better tha D’Addario), and long lasting. I like being able to order custom gauges, too.

    Plus, they’re cured...

    Re: mandolin with violin music

“Glory in the Meetinghouse” - Hot Rize. Tim O’Brien on fiddle, Nick Forster on mandolin. The rest of the band joins in but on their album, it’s just Mando and fiddle.

    Re: New Buckeye “A” model

Very cool! I agree with all of your comments. I was surprised by the A’s tone and volume. Really suits old time, Celtic, etc. tunes, which are my favorites. I also have recovered from MAS as a result...

    Re: New Buckeye “A” model

My F5 is #63 - eight years old. Getting better all the time, to paraphrase Paul McCartney (well known mandolinist, among other accomplishments).

    Re: New Buckeye “A” model

OK, OK, I’ll post pics and a sound file as soon as I can. I’m in the middle of a move, so it may be a couple of days. Check back in a few days.

(Also, I’m not very adept technologically, so can...
  10. Re: Transcriptions for Butch Baldassari's "Travellers" Album?

I think I have a transcription for “El Grillo” somewhere, from Swannanoa with John Reischman a few years back. I’d have to hunt for it, and I’m currently away from home, probably until August. If...

    New Buckeye “A” model

Pete Hart has started making A models. I have a pretty significant birthday coming up, and I contacted Pete to ask if he would build an A for me. (My loving wife asked what I wanted for my birthday,...

    Re: Solo builders

+1 for a Buckeye by Pete Hart. I have #68, an F-5, from 2012, and the tone is remarkable. I have a ‘51 D-18 and a ‘57 D-28, both exceptional guitars, but I find that I usually pick up the Buckeye. He...
  13. Re: F5's from $3000-5000 worth considering - Sept '19

The Buckeye built by Pete Hart. He will customize according to your requests. Usually builds about 5 per year, over the winter. Consistently great mandolins for the price.

Lynn’s a pretty credible source of information (understatement 😎).

I have a Buckeye, built by Pete Hart, who used Carpathian spruce (which would qualify as Eastern European, I suppose). Pete...

    Re: Favorite Acoustic Amps?

There's a Loudbox Mini posted in the Classifieds today

I've had a regular Loudbox, which I liked a lot.

You might also look at Roland amps; they have a variety of sizes, wattage, features,...
  18. Looking to start an informal jam in Ellijay, GA area

I'd like to start an informal jam session in the Ellijay/Blue Ridge, GA area (actually, Cherry Log, if you know where that is).

My thought would be to play a variety of tunes - bluegrass, old...

    Hey, Don,

Luthier (mando, guitar) near north GA

  23. Mandolin and/or guitar luthier near north Georgia?

    Re: Maintaining the sound (sustain)

You might try a compressor/sustainer pedal. Overdrive and reverb will also extend the sustain, but overdrive in particular changes the tonality. I like the Wampler Ego Compressor. ...

    Re: The 'Perfect' Mandolin?

So far, the Buckeye I have is the best one I've ever played - meaning that I haven't contracted an acute case of MAS from playing any other mandolin. Of course, I haven't played them all - yet.
