Re: Silver vs. Nickel James Tailpiece?

When doing some work on my mandolin several years ago Hans ask me it I wanted a James tailpiece instead of his. I said I liked his fine. I don't use the cover, as I like the sound better without,...

I have been doing this for decades, to me it is fast, easy and the only way to restring. I only wish it would work for slotted headstocks. Ah.....
  5. Re: Small mixer with great mic pre's and great phantom power.

You may want to try a stand alone phantom power source. I find if phantom is not sufficient the mic won't work well and will feedback easier. It will also be less noisy as you are not using the...

Re: Cleaning Mold From Inside a Guitar?

dang, I think you are right about seeking help. Maybe a hit song could be written in which a life could have been saved had the deceased sought help. Music does wonderful things and maybe it could...

Re: Noise with cheap magnetic pickups!

I might add, we used to play in a place where we had noise all the time. We found an outlet without compressors for air or kitchen and the noise went away. Had to run a long heavy extension cord, but...

    Re: Oval hole differences

There is also the flat or cant top oval. They have a similar, but different sound than a carved top with either neck.
  9. Re: Circa 1940 Mandolin- Flat Top- recessed tuners- very odd.

My Stewart if form 1920 and has the same bridge as I said, but the tuners are sunk in the rear with the large single plate on back. Were the front loaded tuners from a later period?
  10. Re: Circa 1940 Mandolin- Flat Top- recessed tuners- very odd.

I have an S.S. Stewart with the same bridge. Just made a lower one so it plays better and put the original in the case.
  11. Re: Campanella two-point (How to make an accent on due?)

If the setup is low, it could be a high fret that is touching, not enough to buzz, but enough to dampen the volume. Truss rod, setup should be checked.

Re: Like this site but for guitar....

I used to go to ' the acoustic guitar forum', but don't visit much any more. There are folks from here that I have seen responding there too.

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

I also like my strings in tune. I am usually able to do it with the tuner, but it takes a while of finicky tuning.

  16. Re: ISO: Case that Fits a 1930's Regal Resonator

Don't know it this will work, but if you get the measurements from CES it's a good price.

Re: Noise with cheap magnetic pickups!

Find an outlet that is not on the same circuit as the lights. Plug everything that has to do with sound in that outlet using a long extension cord if you have to. It should help some.

    Re: 1930's SS Stewart Mandolin

I just finished setting up a nice 1920 S.S. Stewart mandolin. All mahogany, with a little work it sounds and plays great. Original case, not a tight fit, but a little foam and it works well. Came...
  19. Re: Shocking revelation! Lyon & Healy Style C on eBay

I bid on it, but the buyer had a higher automatic bid. Not a bad repair and would be a nice mandolin to have at that price. I do hope it will be repaired and played.

Unitune is the next best tuner to a Peterson. Best tuner I have found for size and accuracy.

Re: Restorig my Strad-o-line hit a slight snag

Take a small straight edge that will only touch 3 frets and see if the C# is high. It may be it just need a slight tap to reseat it. I would do this first before filing anything.

Re: Ditson Victory.. in need of TLC, need advice

I recently worked on the tuners of an old S.S,Stewart mandolin with similar tuners. The plate simply screws into the wood on mine and covers the tuning plates.. I also have old tuners and would be...
