Re: eastman md515 vs loar lh600

To me there is not a whole lot of difference in the Eastmans from the 315 to the 815 or Kentuckys from the KM 150 to the lower than 900. Undoubtedly the higher numbers are nicer looking. But there is...

    Re: Compulsive purchase- Flatiron 1N

I love seeing this thread pop up now and then. The 1N is as solid as it ever was, and a fine way to go if bluegrass isn’t your thing. It is still the cheapest truly satisfying mandolin I’ve played.

    Re: Waterloo WL-M Question

I’ve played one at Gryphon. It was good, but you could buy a teens Gibson for the same money, or close to two Northfield Calhouns. But it was a good sounding instrument. Like everything from...

    Re: upgrade thoughts

If you do make the truck to Nor Cal, you can play my Silverangel. The trip would allow you to play Pava, Girouard, Weber, Collings, And Northfield, plus whatever else happens to be in the shops. But...
  6. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

I heard an interview with Tom Ellis a while back. He had seven CNC machines. Collings cuts their headstock binding from one piece of sheet plastic on one of what I would guess is one of many CNCs. My...
  7. Re: Small mixer with great mic pre's and great phantom power.

There are inline boosters out there for about a hundred bucks that will allow you to use less gain on your board. (SoundCloud?) Pres get noisier as they reach maximum gain. People use thes on low...

Iíll try to be happy for you, after I get over the negetave feelings
  9. Re: Small mixer with great mic pre's and great phantom power.

Great sounding pres come at a price. Soundcraft or anyone else can make a great pre, but then the mixer becomes expensive, like QSC and others. A friend has a few pre amps taken from pro recording...

    Re: Education

A QSC powered speaker is a joy to behold. Two of them are better. Not quite as convenient, but if you had two and a small mixer, you’d be happy. If you are never going to need flexibility, an...
  11. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

Here is another instance of market clout, and another reason Collings is so successful. There are a lot of new Collings mandolins out there. One would suppose there would be a dealer or two out there...

    Re: Rehab Hospital

You are on the right track. The single best thing that got me through my open heart surgery was picking up my mandolin and pickin a tune. I could hold it off to the side and play for about five...

    Re: upgrade thoughts

Regarding the MD 315. Of all the Eastman’s I’ve played, the 315 stands out to me, some I’ve liked better than the 515s. But for me you need to buy a quality A style in the $1500 range to get a...

I almost didn’t start this thread, considered it to be in “just another BC pick” category. But clearly, many need to vent. This has been a public service announcement.

    Re: Northfield love

Going from Colling to Northfield is insignificant to me. Both are playable, neither stands out one way or the other. It’s not at all, I like this neck better that that.
  16. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

For not owning one, Iíve played more Collings mandolins than any other brand, probably twenty or so. They have all been impeccable. They have all been toneful. They have played like butter. They have...

Re: Leather straps: flat or braided?

We take for granted what you can just go out and buy here. I use a bootlace on my A1, a Bailey on my Silverangel, and an unknown but very nice round braid on my Arches. The Bailey is the most...

I think if you got to Sylvan then Gryphon another hour down the road, you’ll get about the best selection in Ca. But you won’t see a huge variety of any one brand, except Gryphon has an impressive...

    Re: Education

Here is a happy complication. The mandolin I built is a cannon. Most mandolins I play in stores are not, while I confess most resonate better, but I’m not going to spend six grand on one, hence my...
  20. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

Collings is the best example of pricing premium in the business. They have developed a reputation over a long period of time. What I have noticed is they have resisted putting their name on down...

    Re: Beginner Celtic mandolin

Buy a Flatiron flat top like the 1N. Perfect, affordable, lovely sounding instrument. Iíve seen a few in the $600-800 range lately.

You may never need better. Old Gibsonís are great too, at twice...

Re: Shout out for Ronny Harrison straps

A strap that is perfect for you is a wonderful thing. I have a bootlace for my A 1 that is just right for that mandolin, then there is a Bailey for my SA. Two very different takes on what a strap...

Youíve got things ass backwards. An F5S will greatly improve your playing, because you will play twice as much. It may even eat into your Cafe time. Weíll understand.
  25. Re: Just to put myself on notice for some accountability...

Retirement will kick start an accellerated process for sure. I’ve gotten comments like how good I was for only playing three years, to which I reply, forty years of flat picking guitar got me going,...
