    Re: Harp guy?

    This is very good news.
Now, before the harp guy sees your truck, make a card that says "harps" and tape it over the "pipes" so the bumper sticker reads "Loud harps saves lives."
    But really, I am...

    Re: Harp guy?

    Shucks.
This thread was fast becoming my favorite.
Jonathan - you're my kind of people; lutherie, harp ideas, farm machinery.
I had visions of you holding the smoke wrench, lighting it and saying...
  3. Re: Broken bearing block on tuning machine - can I glue/solder it

Will the bearing blocks fit flush on the plate now?
Was it a peening of the posts (tennons?) that held them on originally?

Re: Now what do I do?

If you are happy with the neck-body joint and it is aligned 'pitch, roll and yaw,' as Sunburst would say, I see two possibe ways out. 1. Cheat the bridge location forward about 0.4 inch from the...

Re: Now what do I do?

Tell us about the way you joined the neck to the body. Is it possible to remove the excess length from the heel- end?

    Re: Truss rod soda straw?

C'mon. You know good and well that Mr. Loar used paper straws. However, they were all tap tuned and had a resonate chamber frequency a half-step down from the body's.

Sorry. I tried to stay out...

    Re: Question about glue

To me, traditional instrument wood glue is hot hide glue.

    Re: Pecan as tone wood?

    Don, and Belbein,
I don't want you to think I'm some sort of tree expert. I'm not.
I don't know what is in the water over there in the Ozarks, but the percentage of above-average fiddle players...

    Re: Pecan as tone wood?

I would question the availability of pecan in "Appalachia" in terms of actual board feet.
I don't know, but it can't be much of the percent of hardwoods.
In the Old Appalachia, I would be looking...

    Re: Pecan as tone wood?

Related taxonomically: both are in the Juglandaceae family.

    Don't be scared.
Anyway, this was your rabbit hole.
  15. Re: Really, why not? (A rumination on necks and joints)

I don't see why you can't build one with the oval sound hole. It would be a great place to mount an upside-down Virzi sound board. Call it 'reVirzi.'

Re: break angle and string tension

    I'm struggling here.
If my imput is 24.5 pounds of pull, regardless if the wound string grips or slips, how can I gain more pull on the other side of the bridge? I only put in 24.5 total.

    Re: Gibson Scroll

Can a small-batch builder actually faithfully copy the Loar F5?

Re: Gibson F9 with sunken top

How long did it take to get to this level?
Has anyone looked to see if the wood tone bar and the carbon fiber bar are still attached?
    How does/did it sound?
