Re: When a mandolin tunes itself

Do you notice this more in the winter, or with longer journeys?
    High humidity, though cozy room?

I once put my hand on the headstock of a ukulele that had a torsion bar. I did this out of...

Re: When a mandolin tunes itself

If the accordion is very wet-tuned then I guess that could make your mandolin appear to be in tune, at least with the others.
  5. Re: Best way to learn to play Smooth and Clean (not sloppy)?

    Lots of good advice above.
If you can stand this, try setting your metronome so that you hear two or even four clicks or drumbeats for every time you have to play a very slow eighth note in a scale....
  6. Re: Embarassing Question - Which Mandolin to Bring to Jam?

Good news. If you bring along your good mandolin and it gets a nasty ding in it then people will at least remember that it was you who had that nice mandolin! :))
    -they’d probably even remember the...
  7. Re: Embarassing Question - Which Mandolin to Bring to Jam?

I’d like to say take the expensive one but two things:
You don’t know how wild a new session (for you) is going to get.
Is it in a bar, a park, a metro station? :)

    And with the cheap one,...

    Re: Mandolin open tunings

A cheap instrument tuned GDGD can actually sound great.
Try FCFC too, it can bring out some extra tone.
These tunings (almost-fifths) can help with the transition to standard tuning, fiddle or...

Re: Octave mandolin - F holes or an oval hole?

‘Chung!’ for an F style, ‘Dung!’ for round hole and ‘Dong!’ for oval.

    Re: A Different Busking Question

    No vid, didn’t happen! :)
  13. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

Yes, I agree, naming names very quickly becomes political.
  14. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

    :)) Sometimes :whistling:

    Good lesson.
  15. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

It could quite easily have been a music writing exercise, a bit like a dictation exercise while learning a language.

Exercise: Here’s a blanc template with no sharps or flats, listen to the tune,...

    Re: Banjo or banjolin?

Problem is most people have heard these instruments indoors, and often inside a small room cramped up with a whole load of other instruments. No breathing space.

    These beauties, when tuned in...

Re: Future octave mandolin player question?

One use is that the greater number of people who turn their hard-earned cash into fine mandolins then the greater number of fine mandolins on the market. ;)
  19. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

Well I think that… it’s an interesting discussion.
I probably wouldn’t have included where I’d found the typo mainly because it distracts from what’s important - a nice dive into mode theory. :)

    Re: A Different Busking Question

Another one I saw was a poster with large text at the top. It was an interesting, quirky and ambiguous story about the man's dog.

  21. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

Could be getting people to think modally?

Here’s an interesting Devil’s Dream exercise in modes.
You basically stay in the same key but begin the tune on different notes in the scale,
    Enjoy!...

    Re: A Different Busking Question

    Humour helps a lot.
I saw one guy with a whole load of money, bills in his guitar case and it was a windy day so I wondered why he wasn’t concerned that it would all fly away. Then I realised that...
