  1. Re: Recommend some beginner Blues / Jazz Blues Lead Sheets

One of the most simple melodies is the head to C-Jam Blues (Basie); can be used as a jumping off point for many possibilities!
  2. Re: IMO - Why red spruce is the loudest top wood

All that I know is that a great builder can make great mandolins with a variety of woods for the soundboards. I don't prejudge based on the type of wood used, but judge a mandolin based on how it...

    Re: Your First Upgrade

My first was an old Harmony Monteray that I bought for $25 in a pawn shop. I couldn't figure out why it could be in perfect tune for open strings, but the two E strings kept getting further and...

    Re: Mandolin Influences

Although I was aware of mandolin throughout high school in the 1960s, there wasn't a lot of mandolin music or Bluegrass in Iowa at that time. Jethro in the Kellogg's commercials... In high school...

I've been picking with the same two guys for almost 20 years. We'll get together most Sundays and play out several times a year, sometimes with ringers like Matt Munisteri, Greg Ruby or Don...

Re: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall

The only excuse for hanging a mandolin is if it participated in a Killer solo! In North Carolina, a capital crime is punishable by lethal injection, and sometimes what I play could be considered a...
  12. Re: How did you feel about your new build Mando?

If you are interested in something other than the traditional, I recommend Sorensen Mandolins - Steve is a great guy to work with and has worked with me from the begging to the end. The thing is,...

Re: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall

In my neck of the woods, most people keep a beater out in the open on a stand, so that when the B&E occurs, they don't take the time to search out the good ones!

    Re: Ellis A5?

I agree with the "hop a Southwest junket" approach or have it shipped and play it in the privacy of your home with a 48 hr approval. A guitar show is no place to audition any acoustic instrument,...

    Re: Ellis A5?

Old Growth: they are all very close. The 1990s Nugget has a better low end and excels at swing chord voicings. Very even across the strings & up the neck. Don Stierbeg's nugget and mine sound...

    Re: Ellis A5?

I have been fortunate enough to have chased down & caught a few great mandolins. I let a very good Collings MT2 go to pick up an X-braced F5 Duff. An Ellis A5 wormed it's way into the herd and...

A "unique voice". Loved his music. The world was better for introducing some of us to the great American treasure trove of songs.
  18. Re: New Apitius Club Jazz Mandolin acquisition…

I love the whole vibe of that mandolin. Visually flows together. Not as ostentatious as an 5F, but sensuous in its curves. Bet you're not taking it to a lot of Bluegrass jams!

Re: Is this harmful to the Mandolin?

    Re: Neck length

Also, don't confuse neck length with scale length. Your Od Wave has the same scale length (nut to saddle) as an F-5 at 13 7/8", despite joining the body at about the 12th fret rather than the 15th. ...
