Re: Lyon & Healy vs Gibson

Pete also made an L&H-style mandola for Jamie Masefield, didn't he?
  2. Re: Bach Cello Suites arranged for CGDA instruments/Octave Mandol

Yeah, the Werner Icking versions from IMSLP should do ya. The suites have been transcribed for every instrument you can think of, including nose flute — but after the plastic surgery I'm having...

    Re: Mandola cases

Both cases at Intermountain are spoken for, according to a phone call I just made.

The Gryphon case doesn't fit a vintage Gibson according to Gryphon. I asked about that one a while back.
  5. Re: Pickup replacement for Fender FM61SE electric?

Wow, it looks like Steve is completely out of the electric mandolin business now ... no instruments on his site. Been privileged to have several Ryders through my hands in the past 15 years or so......

    Re: '23 Gibson A2

I tend to agree with James. If you have a '23 A2 you should be able to trade it for a nice mandolin with the exact neck proflie you want.
  7. Re: Pickup replacement for Fender FM61SE electric?

Yep, I checked with Pete last night and his single-coil is probably my best option unless there's something else out there.
  8. Pickup replacement for Fender FM61SE electric?

Anyone replaced a pickup on a Fender FM61SE e-mando — the 8-string Korean import from 20 years ago?

What did you use? I have one that needs an upgrade.

I have an old Seymour Duncan pickup but...

Re: recommend me an acoustic bass

I tried a Dobro-branded resophonic bass or two back in the day. You can't beat 'em for volume and the tone wasn't bad.
  11. Re: Banner headstock Gibson J-45 at Goodwill, bidders go nuts

Back for round 3 (identified as an LG-2 this time)

  12. Re: Banner headstock Gibson J-45 at Goodwill, bidders go nuts

Well, at least Goodwill responded to my email by noting in the description that it's an LG-2, although they didn't change the title of the ad. Perhaps the third time will be the charm.
  13. Re: Banner headstock Gibson J-45 at Goodwill, bidders go nuts

As I more or less predicted, the Goodwill sale must have hit a snag. The guitar has been relisted; they're calling at a J-45 this time, which we have established it is not.

    There is a reserve,...

    Re: Yet another...Mystery Mandolin

Huh? It is almost certainly an S.S. Stewart. If you're saying we don't know which "jobber" actually built the mandolin, that's true -- but it's also true for any mandolin sold by brands that used the...
  15. Re: Banner headstock Gibson J-45 at Goodwill, bidders go nuts

There's a stage musical about Sister Rosetta Tharpe that I went to see in Seattle, back when going to stage musicals was something people did. Among the instruments played by the lead actor was a...
  16. Re: Banner headstock Gibson J-45 at Goodwill, bidders go nuts

The last really expensive guitar I saw on Shopgoodwill was a Ramirez classical guitar with a big repaired crack in the top. It was listed twice -- I'm thinking perhaps the original bidder didn't pay,...

The OP does mention that the tuners on his mandolin are replacements.

    Re: Yet another...Mystery Mandolin

Well, there's only one shot in the eBay ad where you can see any tuner gears at all, and it sure looks to me like the tuners on both mandolins are worm over.

The soundhole inlay is a dead ringer,...

    Re: Yet another...Mystery Mandolin

In the early 20th century, a number of independent Italian luthiers in and around New York were making guitars and mandolins that took some of their cues from tradition, some from what the big-name...
  20. Banner headstock Gibson J-45 at Goodwill, bidders go nuts

Here is a wartime Gibson guitar; I think it is a J-45 but I would be happy to be corrected.

This instrument is far too cool for Goodwill, but...

Re: Q. Re: up-tuned Eastman mandocello

Eastman recommends a very light C string: .056 gauge. A heavier C might take some of the buzz out.
