on the other hand, i see 5-10 year old MTs being posted in the classifieds all the time for ~90% of their original MSRP at the time of purchase.

fwiw, i came to mandolin after playing classical viola very seriously for most of my life. i think that thinking critically about fingerings (as opposed to the path of least resistance) would benefit...
There have been plenty of improvements to strads... longer fingerboard, no more fingerboard wedge, modern neck angle, neck shape, neck joint method, metal flatwound strings, etc.

vocal harmonies, guitar, and mandolin can be a very nice combination. make sure the guitar keeps a good bass going.
Just out of curiosity -- a couple months ago, I started noticed new base model Collings MTs going for ~$2575 or something in that range. They used to be MSRP $2340 -- not a huge jump, but still...

do you put the strap on your right shoulder or over your head and on the left shoulder? i tie around the nut and put the strap on the left shoulder, and it balances very nicely.
I used to spend quite a bit of time playing mandos in Greg's shop. The Dryers were nice, but the necks were just too chunky for me.
That's probably not a great idea, getting denatured alcohol on your fretboard will pull tons of moisture out of the wood... wood shrinks, and frets get loose.
I have an Eastman 505... the Northfields that I've played are in another league altogether.
I personally think that Eastmans are fairly consistent insofar as they all have a distinct 'pop' to...
