  1. Re: What to look/listen for when mandolin shopping?

Does the sound appeal to me?
Is the playing comfortable, ie, neck and right hand?
    Is the condition acceptable?

Not much else matters to me. Your mileage seems more variable.

    If the tuners...
  2. Re: Detailed plans for a dovetail neck joint jig

While instrument plans abound, I think the proprietary effort in complex jig design is reserved to the makers. There is a good video of Austin Clark using his jig, but not much discussion of it. I...

Re: 3 hours of practice a day?

You make good progress that way, with a little warmup, maybe slow scales to start, Evan Marshall suggests a similar division of time, adjusted to time available. I can only handle 30 minute bits,...

Re: Playing a five string vs a four

Depends on the kind of music you play and how you want to chord. For me, too many noters can get muddy.

The 5 string doesn't mess with your mind any more than learning chords (3 or 4 finger) on...
  5. Re: Rio Grande Mock 4 Pickup for Gibson EM200

If it’s still a single coil, and there’s no info on their site, you’ll have the same issue with the new pickup.

Steve Ryder makes a stacked humbucker. Don’t know it’s dimensions.

I’d need to see numbers. The proof is in the testing.
  7. Re: Anyone know of a website or app that will display all chord n

Nope. But I don't get around much.

And whatever note you chose as the root, the spacing is always moving along the same on any string, either up or down.

    Re: Ashokan Farewell Tabs anyone?

In addition to being performers, Jay and Molly Ungar are in the music publishing business. They should get paid for their work. $2 in this case.

and I’m sure they’ve lost significant monies...
  12. Re: Should I take my Eastman MD305 on vacation?

If you can see you can play it 15 minutes daily, then the rest is logistics. I haven't had a problem with a mandolin as carryon.

But ymmv, especially internationally. I would check for CITES...
  13. Re: Cowichan Valley Bluegrass Festival on Vancouver Island, BC

Sorry, our caravan will be heading to Wenatchee at that time.

Be sure and catch the Slocan Ramblers, just saw them at Shelton. Very cool band, all awesome players with great harmony singing. ...

    Yes, data.

People thought the sun revolved around the earth until they had actual data.

But a lot of work has gone into dealing with this, and a very good read is 'Music, Physics and Engineering' by Harry Olsen. The book is about the development of hifi stereo audio reproduction which...

Been there, did that. Thanks for the heads up.

  17. Re: Bob Venn Tiny Moore 5 String Electric Mandolin

To me, it’s not pretty and there are no sound clips to overcome that. And the neck has no truss rod and bowed from the tension of only 5 strings. While that could be fixed, I’ll bet it takes quite...

Re: Looking to Replace the Bridge

Silking has nothing to do with the finish, but all to do with the fact that the wood was cut directly across the grain. It exposes the medullary rays. Very pronounced in white oak, delicate...
  20. Re: If you could have any mandolin in the world….

    Re: Opinions on Ratliff Mandolins

Re: practice advice: speed vs repetoire

Bad taste comes in both slow and quick tempos. We’d like the judgment on the taste side and the ability on the speed side.

    Or at least I would.

I practice both exercises and songs, more...
