Re: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall

    Here we go again!

Gravity will ensure that there a downside when you hang it up. (Are you acquainted with the rules of cricket? i.e. about coming in until you’re out etc.)

    Not getting at you...

    Re: Mandolin Stand Recommendations

    Who?!

Its not the stands its what goes on around them. You can damage an instrument taking it out of the case and I suppose an instrument can deteriorate leaving it in the case. Life is only...
  3. Re: oddball (pseudo?-) resonator w. amusing "professional" setup

..... and exactly what “profession” was that person qualified in? Certainly not lutherie - it’s eight strings are equally spaced across the fingerboard to produce what looks like an eight string...

    Re: Mandolin Stand Recommendations

The Cooperstand is OK (I bought one a couple of years ago) but I wouldn’t use one in situations where an instrument is likely to get knocked over.

I notice that they don’t (can’t?) supply a case with the instrument. Is the next question going to be “Where can I get a case for .......”?

    Re: Mandolin Stand Recommendations

The other thing about the Hercules triple is that, with care, its possible to adjust one so that it will hold instruments of different sizes at the same time - e.g. guitar, GBOM and mandolin. As to...

    Re: Vega Repair

There shouldn’t be a problem taking all the strings off - it there is there must be something wrong with the mandolin. Don’t listen to the, so called, guitar “experts” about leaving some tension on a...

    Re: Mandolin Stand Recommendations

That link takes me to a Gibson bass guitar! That said, mandolins fit nicely into any of the Hercules guitar “gripping” stands. The only one I’ve found not quite right is my Mandostrat which has an...

Re: Calace mandolin, 1926 - value?

Ah! Somebody else has noticed the holes. Welcome to the forum.

Those are one of life’s mysteries like who owns the water in a river and who invented fog. You’re a better person than us if you can...

Re: Any clues about this British-made mandolin?

I must protest! Photos of Devon and not a spoonful of clotted cream in sight?

Around £3.99 + postage in the UK. Thanks but I think I prefer the packaging that comes with the Grolsch washers!

I’m having similar difficulty with a slightly over-sized strap hole on a normal sized endpin. Someone recently suggested using the rubber rings from Grolsch bottle caps (be sure to drink the Grolsch...

    Re: Short Neck Mandolin

Zero frets usually indicate European manufacture as does a dot on the 9th fret (either that or it was built by a guitar maker).

Fylde always put a 9th fret dot on their mandolins - no idea why -...

Re: Any clues about this British-made mandolin?

There are many small builders over here in the UK, who come and go, but I don’t recognise that particular one. What I would say though, is that it doesn’t look very old to me.

    Re: Strap button on neck?

They’re not on the neck as such they’re on the heel and that’s the way Will Kimble fits them. For those who “think” they’ll get in the way, could I ask if they’ve ever actually tried it? Personally I...

The only type of leather strap I’d leave off in the case are those stupidly designed ones with a buckle.

Eastman fibreglass is probably your best option. The Eastman As, like the teens and twenties Gibson As, are slightly larger than modern As so they won’t fit in many modern cases. The only downside is...

    Re: Mandolin Try-out Etiquette

    Re: Mandolin missing 46 years

Looking at Spann, Y4091 doesn’t sound like a valid FON. Prefixes only go as high as “G” and that was in the 1940s. So we have a mandolin of un-known model, un-known date, no serial number and what...
