    Re: 23 Loar Setup Video

The excuses and rationalizations are disturbing. The video doesn't lie. He treated a priceless instrument carelessly and demonstrated less than impressive technique. I see and example of what not to...

Re: Gibson EM200-good years bad years??

There are a few changes over time that mirror the changes in Gibson electric guitars over time. The knobs change from barrel, to top hat, to reflector top, to witch hat. The pickup wire changes at...

That's going to hurt the price quite a bit.

    Re: 23 Loar Setup Video

It won't be fit for its purpose much longer in less than qualified hands.

The video was a horror show. Utterly careless. Some "luthiers" don't have enough respect for their customer's property.

    Re: Weissenborn plectrum guitar!

The guitar on ebay has been messed up pretty badly. The headstock has been cut down, new tuners, enlarged soundhole, tailpiece, all kinds of problems.

Re: Am I asking too much?

They are nicely made mandos but not in high demand by players.

Re: 1934 Martin arch top tenor guitar

    Looks like a fine example.

Do you prefer an archtop to a flat top?

    Re: 1906 f4

My impression is that there are not as many interested buyers for this era of mandolin compared to later ones, would you say that's the case?

Re: Question for Seasoned Ebay sellers

I believe you have the option to report the buyer to ebay for "buyer abuse" in the event of fraud. Call in and ask to speak to someone who specializes in this sort of thing. If you can document such...

    Re: 1906 f4

It's a beautiful instrument no doubt, a presentation piece. The approach to the sale is just as rare :)

Despite the cool inlay and rarity, I think the value (to me) is hurt quite a bit by the...
  13. Re: Gibson H2 Mandola (1907ish?) Need Advice and a Good Luthier

My choice would be a big jar of nothing in this case, it's very normal for the ambered finish to flake off or be missing over parts of the inlay.

  15. Re: Gibson H2 Mandola (1907ish?) Need Advice and a Good Luthier

Get the cracks in the top properly reglued. Address the split neck lamination. Replace the missing piece of binding. Find a screw to replace the missing tuner screw. Make sure the frets are ok....
  16. Re: Birdy - UK Singer/Songwriter Plays a vintage Martin Tenor

She's 18, already released two albums, on the Hunger Games soundtrack, another song in the movie Brave. I'd say she's doing alright for barely having started college :)

    She's also the highest...
  17. Birdy - UK Singer/Songwriter Plays a vintage Martin Tenor

There is a mainstream artist playing a vintage tenor that is starting to get some serious attention. Birdy is a young singer who also plays piano.

Here she is at RTL Studios performing with a 1951...

  19. Re: During the time Gibson didn't use best materials for F5s.

I know it's fun to kick around the 70's mandolins, but I can think of plenty of plastic parts from the 1920's & 30's (pickguards, tuner buttons) that break down too.

Re: What Should I Do/Not Do to my Gibson 1916 F4?

No. Just no. Windex? Noooooooooooo. Paper towels are abrasive. Don't use them on a vintage instrument that you care about. You'll do more harm than good.

Just put new strings on it. If the...

    Re: Mandolins with bowed necks

This has been my experience as well. You are looking at a compression refret to establish the proper relief and neck stiffness. Anyone experienced with old Martin guitars should be qualified. As some...

    Re: "Inside Llewylyn Davis"--sneak review

That sounds a lot like another Coen Brothers film: A Serious Man. It was not very rewarding to watch and I wouldn't be surprised if they followed a similar formula for this one.

    I have higher...
