What do you guys think a restoration like this would cost?
I own #262 and its just about the best givens i have had, its similar to this one in its wood and neck shape. this looks like an A5 to me. the A6's have bound headstock and different inlay.i think...
Did the fern sell? I just looked at Gruhns and i didn't see it. I was really wishing it would be there for 20 years so i would have the time to save up.
i didn't see a fern at gryphon. I thought that the Loar at Gryphon was a flower pot.
Hey, what number was this one?
I was thinking about the two inlay patterns that i love so much and have been trying to decide which i prefer.
quality of instrument aside. which do you prefer, the classic Flower pot or Fern?
...
the interview with george and stan was cool, can't quite tell if the opinion is the market is moving up or if it has started to dip though. good points were made.
I count six Loars and two ferns....
If I had an extra 90K I think i would have a hard time choosing between the refin loar or the original 26fern on ebay. Oh, for an extra 100K!! or for and extra 1K for that matter.
There is a great building video on his site. I hear he is a real good guy.
i was just wondering, why the difference in price between the one at larry Wexers 145K and these at Gruhns? I would think the lower priced one would get snatched up right away at such an appariant...
Get Grisman and Garcia's "Not for Kids Only" I got it a year or so ago and my kids love it.
i realize that the checking on the top does not hurt the sound but does it do anything to the value?
kyman,
this has all been a ploy to get you '25-30's owners to dump your ferns at low low prices.
Give me a call if you want to unload your 29 doorstop....
At what point did gibson start with the thicker tops and lower neck angles? I pour through the "archive" on weekends looking for the subtle differences, but it is hard to see thick tops and neck...
I would love to hear what the opinions are concerning the 30's era F5s. There is one for sale at Carmel Music and the recent discussions going on here concerning Loars and post Loar Ferns got my mind...

I was working on the Dylan tune Senor. that Tim O'brien recorded on Red on Blonde. I had been working out the breaks that tim plays off the youtube site. I should have just recorded it or something...
I ran across this on James Curtis's web site.
its a pretty cool video of him building a mandolin in a time lapse formate with voiceover.
its on his home page, takes a little while to load but...
i would take measurements before buying one. especially for a scroll and debth. I bought a webber case for my OM and it was just a little bit off. but just enough to make the case unuseable.
Piiman you dog.
is that the Heiden that was here on the classifieds? That one looked sweet. I have heard nothing but good things about them.
Has anyone seen a Bob Givens Mandola? I was reading through an old isssue of Mandolin World News winter 78/79 I think. And there was an add for Givens Mandolin by a place in Idaho. It said something...
