  1. Re: Recent Repairs: Electric Tenors, 6-String M'cello, Etc.

    Re: Rescued and reborn

Capt E -- it's ply back/sides. I've had the chance to peek under bindings at and endblocks, etc. on dozens of Kays of this style and similar and they've all been ply b/s. Tops are solid, though!
  3. Recent Repairs: Electric Tenors, 6-String M'cello, Etc.

I've been busy, as usual -- and here are some oddballs that are a little mando-centric...!

Re: How to do a black top finish

    Black!!!

I've used India ink (of the sumi-e variety) with a pad to apply it on the bare wood -- then finished-over that. It looks really handsome and period-ish for vintage repair jobs. This may...

  7. Re: Repair: 1914 Martin Style B Flatback Mando

    Gorgeous mando, Brian!

I usually use the GHS A240 set which is 32w, 20w, 13, 9 and approximately the tension of period strings. They sound good, play easy, and are safe for most old mandos. 34w-10...
  8. Re: Repair: 1914 Martin Style B Flatback Mando

Just coincidence -- lotsa pickwear! I've seen this pickguard on alternate-branded Martin flatbacks -- maybe a Grinnell one? Can't remember -- before -- and, like you said, on the bowlbacks. It's a...

Re: Jacobson Carbon Fiber Mandolin Prototype

Folks, we have a winner!!! It's hard to make CF shine.

I roll my eyes at CF instruments until I hear ones I like well enough. This thing sounds awesome and looks killer, too! I love new materials...

  13. Re: Latest Repairs -- It's been a while! Elec mandos, 'linettos,

    Thanks, all of you guys!

I'm going to try to post more, BTW -- just make it a habit to share some of this odd stuff. There's a L&H style A mandola I can't wait to spruce up and post centerfolds...
  14. Latest Repairs -- It's been a while! Elec mandos, 'linettos, etc.

Guys -- I'm sorry I haven't been around. My repair workload is scary and family takes up any spare time after it -- with music shoved-in around the corners!!! I also just haven't been working on...
  15. Re: Please help identifing this mandolin - Thanks Antonio

Got a PM from the owner -- checked this out asking RE if it's a Weymann -- certainly not a Weymann. It looks Boston-made -- Cole, Fairbanks -- guesses. The headstock shape, style of the inlay, etc....

    1) It's because both of those mando-jos were actually way too dark off-the-bat and I wanted them to have some increased volume/punch for their owners. I almost always use a heavy,...
  19. Re: Mandolone, Regal Prince Tenor, MB-Jr, Lange Jo-Mando, Sov Jo-

Agreed with both of you guys -- the tenor is wild!

It has a ton of punch/volume but obviously the box was made for a 6-string and if you had 6 strings running light/medium it would be thunderous....

  21. Re: Customer Repairs -- Octofone, mandolinetto, Washburn style E,

Hee hee -- yes, I'm very familiar with Regals from the 30s and the Octos have a lovely sound but the necks are, basically, the same thing they use for their 4-string tenor guitars (maybe 1/16" wider...
  22. Re: Customer Repairs -- Octofone, mandolinetto, Washburn style E,

The back-angle is pretty average for one of those (and Regal tenor guits) and a bit better than the pics let on -- they don't need much with the light build to get 'em going pretty well.

    The other...
