I think the XS are a lot better than the Exp74CM, which was my go to before the XS.
The XS sound better to me, and they last a really really long time. Like four times as long.
Good stuff.
Im not a big pick guard fan and don't use them, BUT I have to say that is a really cool design.
It looks really good on that mandolin, and blends in very nicely.
Kinda sharp.
For nice mandolins you should go to Schoenberg in Tiburon, or Gryphon in Palo Alto.
They are both about an hour from Berkeley buy car.
Gryphon in Palo Alto always has a nice selection of...
I have traveled with guitars and other large instruments like Sitars, which are pretty huge in a case.
Your best bet is to take it to the gate, and if they don't let you take it on, just request a...
If that is the one I played the other day, it is astounding.
Simply an amazing mandolin.
Blew everything else away.
The other Northfields there were also awesome, but this one is special.
I saw him play solo in a small theater in Santa Barbara, and was surprised what one guy and a microphone can do with that little instrument.
He played a wide range of stuff, from Classical to...
Kentucky for sure.
My first mandolin was a Gretsch New Yorker, and it is OK, but the neck is thick and the tone is just meh...
The Kentucky starter models I have played were far better for...
Thanks for the reply.
I did get it all set up and working for my friend.
It is a cool old thing.
Interesting tone.
Got them a capo to put it up to regular banjo tuning.
I am pretty sure no...
Thanks to all above.
It makes sense now.
I had no idea.
It has a really nice tone.
It is not super bright, and has a comfortable volume.
Cool instrument.
First, apologies for a banjo question, but I dont want to join a banjo forum to ask, and I figured one of you will know the answer.
A friend asked me to restring and set up his Grandmother's...
I will guess Dunlop Primetone Semi-Round.
Looks like it.
Shape and bevel is right, and the circle for the logo makes sense.

It isn’t for me.
Not passing judgement on their musicianship or on the music, I just don’t enjoy listening to it.
I’m not usually fond of discordant experimental stuff, regardless of genre.
It...
I came to mandolin from guitar.
Some people tell guitarists to think of the mandolin as the bottom four strings of a guitar turned upside down.
Dont do this... It is a bad way to think about it. ...
Beato is awesome. He is really good at this.
Mandolins go out of tune all the time, for whatever reason it chooses.
Having matched pairs of stings make it really obvious when they are slightly out.
Best you can do is have it set up...
Nowell at Living Tree Music did a fantastic job on my instruments.
He does beautiful work, and makes fantastic instruments too.
He is in the Valley.

Holy cow, that is a beautiful instrument.
Love the woods used.
Stunning top and back.
It is listed on their website as having an Engelmann top.
Must just be a mistake on Gruhn's side. ...
Jaco is one of my favorite musicians of all time.
Apart from his amazing solo albums and Weather Report, his work with Joni Mitchell is some of his most unique and lovely playing.
The way his...
Or you can keep playing until you develop thicker callouses.
At some point soon, your fingers will not hurt and it will all be good, as long as you keep playing.
Shouldn't take too long.
Generally, the thumb shouldn't be on the point of the V at the center back of the neck.
In fact the center of the back of the neck usually isn't touching any part of your hand, other than...
It is mainly due to to the fact that he is a really great mandolinist playing on a super great mandolin.
On your end, your picking is a tad timid.
I think you might only be plucking one of the...
It definitely reeks of Google Translate.
DeepL is a far superior translator, and you can upload whole documents for translation.

There is no such thing as too many instruments, as long as you have the space for them.
Can be a drag when you move though, and having to get a place that has an extra room just for the...
It is a super adventurous, interesting, and cool design.
However, surely the scroll shapes taking up huge real estate in the meat of the tone producing area of the mandolin will hamper tone.
Your...
