    Re: RIP Pharoah Sanders

He had a very long career. I first came across him on Coltrane's Live at The Village Vanguard Again, and only last year he got a 5 star review in the Times for his album with Floating Points and The...

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

Forgive me if it was mentioned and I missed it, but one thing which makes a big difference is how far the body of the instrument is from the strings. In other words, the closer the strings to the...
  4. Re: New Steve Cooney guitar album of harp music

I've just listened to Steve's beautiful CD at lunchtime today, and I thought it would be good to watch him play some of this stuff.

    Magic.

Re: Useful Tip For Changing Strings

If your instrument has a moveable bridge, then it is certainly a good idea to keep tension on to keep it from moving. For an instrument with a fixed bridge, that wouldn't be a problem.
    Other than...
  6. Re: Any good reputable sellers in Europe after the closing of TAM

I'm afraid TAMCO in Brighton, England is a big loss to the mandolin community. I am not aware of anywhere else that even comes close.

Moloney Music in Galway, Ireland is in the EU but not in the...

Re: DO I need a better mandolin?

I don't generally think it's a good idea to buy an instrument without trying it.

I would stick with what you have for now, until maybe one day you get a chance to try some others somewhere and...

Re: post a video of yourself

I met Negar in Crete in March 2019. She was teaching an oud course, and I was doing groupwork with Efren Lopez at the same time. Her concert was fantastic. Very nice lady as well.

    Re: 10-string mandolin

Further to my comment about Hathway, I had a look to see if Hobgoblin are stocking his stuff these days.
It turns out there is a 10 string by him in their London store. They haven't got a picture...

    Re: 10-string mandolin

    Thanks a lot man.

A big part of finding a maker obviously depends on your location and your budget.

As you probably realise, I play a Stefan Sobell 10 string mandolin. Hard to find and...

    Re: 10-string mandolin

I have played 10 string mandolin since 1984 as my primary instrument. However I tune the bottom strings to D which suits me better. I play Scottish music.

  12. Re: Advice on valuing my fathers Stefan Sobell mandolin

    Hi English Rose,

Stefan Sobell has got a page on his web site where he advertises instruments which are available now. Very often these are instruments which are being sold on behalf of people...

Re: post a video of yourself

Thanks John, and also Frankdolin. Actually it's the first video I've ever done of my singing, and I don't really sing on stage. As I say, I do quite like singing though.
  14. Re: Andy Irvine's Sobell instruments missing amid airport chaos

There is a report on The Irish Bouzouki Forum Facebook page that Andy's two instruments have been found at Copenhagen Airport and have been returned to him. I so hope this is true ....
  15. Re: Stephen Foster on Mandolin & Tabs at a Jam?

I quite enjoy singing. I know I'm not much good, but I go on the basis that EVERYBODY can sing. This song is Hard Times Come Again No More, by Stephen Foster. I heard Hannah Rarity sing it...

Just had time for a quick listen Kevin. It's cool to see the Cretan mandolin. Different sound, I think.

I suppose so, but they sound happy. I kind of like it. I really enjoy his approach actually, and I like what he's done with this mandolin.

I was so taken with Ron Hyde that I want to put up this video of him talking about a really nice 1907 Gibson.

Worth a look. It might affect what you think about that mandolin, I would say.

    Music from Central France

This is a nice video of a band called Cadene, who seem like they are from Central France. The pipes are certainly from there. (Cornemuse du Centre). Really nice, I think. Pretty funky looking lot as...
