    Re: Whiskey barrel octave mandolin

Since no one else has dared to bring it up, it would be ideal for playing Rye Whiskey or Whiskey Before Breakfast.

    For posterity or whatever:

    Re: Thoughts on keys.

Most of the bluegrass guitarists I know will play out of E forms. However most bluegrass guitarists are flatpickers. Scruggs used fingerpicks when he played guitar. You Are My Flower, which is...
  3. Re: First Mandolin Choice, what is available to me now

Just to clarify a point on intonation. With modern factory built mandolins the location of the frets is rarely a problem. Fret slots are CNC cut and usually accurate. Fret location can be a...

Re: Overcoming halted progress and frustration

I am in the camp of step away from it for a little while. The longest I took to learn a song was just short of 40 years to learn Cannonball Rag on guitar. I would mess with it, set it down, come...
  5. Re: Saddle string slots are too low - replace saddle or fill in s

The zero fret only works for the other end, not the bridge.

What kind of bridge did these mandolins use? Could he get a new saddle from Gibson or whoever the bridge supplier was? Did they use...

Gary Scruggs introduced Soldier's Joy as going back to the 15th century. Earl proudly piped up "I wrote it."

    Re: Thoughts on keys.

There is a musical reason for that though. C, A, G, E and D are the only keys with open string, first position chords. That is the sound expected and demanded of bluegrass guitar. I can play in...

    Re: Thoughts on keys.

I have been surprised by some pretty good horn or sax players who really did not like to have to play G, A or E. They would hang around in Bb or F all day given the chance.

To take this even further off the beaten path, a friend of mine whose last name is Wolf worked with a number of Mexicans on a landscaping crew who referred to him as Seņor El Lobo. So it seems in...

    Re: Thoughts on keys.

The playing a song in all twelve keys without a capo exercise is great on both guitar and mandolin. It has opened up my mind on how to play a song several times. I would do it more often except for...
  13. Re: Could I leave mando in car in winter while skiing?

When I first read your post I thought you were referring to the post just before it about breaking into cars and leaving more banjos in them. I did not think you were that sort of person.

    Re: Technique adjustments

The reason for keeping your wrist straight is not so much to improve your playing as it is to prevent carpal tunnel injuries. You should definitely thank your teacher for that one.
  16. Re: Could I leave mando in car in winter while skiing?

I had a very bad experience taking my Martin guitar to a gig at negative 10F. It went from the house to the warmed up car and from the car to the gig and vice versa. There was not more than four...

The small lines are millimeters on your ruler. The numbers are centimeters though sizes would be specified as 10 mm. However if the tuner is an old tuner the specifications are probably in inches....

A mandolin friend of mine is responsible for quality control at a plant that produces about 2/3 of the vodka in the United States so we learned a few.

Re: Attack, pick and string gauge

Playing bluegrass guitar I was taught to not get the pick deeply into the strings. One young hot picker described it as dancing across the tops of strings. Bryan Kimsey once said on the old...
  21. Re: Jam Etiquette / Rules Question - Should songs be banned

This is the only song I know of strictly in that genre. Or maybe it is a Not-murdered girl ballad.

At least one poster on the thread talked about a jam leader who did just that with murdered girl ballads.
  23. Re: Jam Etiquette / Rules Question - Should songs be banned

I have played Wagon Wheel probably more than most of, if not all, the people in here because a singer I used to work with loved it and sang it constantly. That being said, there is a time and a...

    Re: Non-mando question - singing

I would even go a step further to say that the best singers are fanatical about finding a key that fits their voice. I have known some that were way beyond being particular about it.

    They still...
