    Re: My Greatest Regret

*Took piano lessons as a child
*moved to guitar as a youngster (12yo)
*picked up the mandolin as a teen
    *played Bass semi-professionally in my 20s (rock/punk)
    *did the singer-songwriter thing...

    Re: Blue Chip v Primetone?

I have the Wegan TF120. It's triangular and beveled. For me the Primetone was all volume and no tone.
  3. Re: Northfield Calhoun versus Flatiron Pancake

The Flatiron pancakes fretboard is flat against the mandolins top where the Calhoun is elevated if I'm not mistaken... like a Big Muddy or Red valley.

    Re: Blue Chip v Primetone?

The Primetone is too bright sounding and "clicky"... or, "shrill". It is cheaper however. I like my BC and Wegan.

    Re: Martin Monel mandolin strings

I tried a set of them on my Weber a few years back (2019 if my memory is servicing me well) and remember not really liking them as much as I like phosphor bronze strings. Glad they are working for...

    Re: Kentucky Vs LOAR

The Loar lm110 does have a solid, hand carved top but does not have solid woods for the back and sides but only sports ply woods. So for that reason the Kentucky wound be a far superior choice....

  11. Re: New to mando...coming from guitar...where would you start?

Coming from guitar myself, the best advice for learning mandolin I was ever given was:

Learn to play Mandolin, a fretted fiddle, not a tiny guitar.

    Re: Good F5 Strap

I use a Lakota Leathers round braided one on my Weber F. It's good!
  13. Re: Would I be happier with a ‘20s Gibson F4?

    Re: Gibson F-2

I've heard of folks adding elevated fretboards to older models and joining them at the 14th fret as a way of improvement, making the mandolin more comfortable to play. Could be that someone had this...
  18. Re: Chord learning paralysis - getting over the initial hump

This is such great advice. I'd like to add that training your ear isn't only for playing melody/lead but also for hearing chord patterns and learning how to be a supporting musician to the lead...
  19. Re: Sturgill mandolin and guitar on fb marketplace

It looks like a handmade (folk art) home build. Maybe someone's project. I don't think that I've ever seen a reverse, hand drawn scroll before. Interesting.

Re: New player with new instrument headache!

That's a really good idea. We can only help so much without hearing full knowledge of what is going on.

Re: New player with new instrument headache!

I agree with Richard500 and would try a string change before making too many judgements. Also, I would add some graphite to the string slots (bridge and nut) to ensure that nothing is catching there.

    Re: Volume vs Tone

I've noticed the same thing with my Weber Yellowstone. Sometimes it seems quieter, perhaps 'mellow'. Although it may be explained due to the fact that my other mandolins are really loud Flat tops.
