Re: I'm a new guy too. Crown No. 2

Those strings are likely to be too heavy. The D'Addario EJ73 would be as heavy as I'd go, and even that may be too much. If you do fit the strings, keep a careful watch on the neck, it should remain...

Re: What case for my Kentucky KM500

Dunno if it's just me, but no matter what link I select on that "Musicians Friend" site, I always end up at this item:
    HEDD Type 05 Studio Monitor, 5 1/2" woofer, 2x50W.

    Something is very odd...

Re: I'm a new guy too. Crown No. 2

If it's playable, probably more suited to Irish than bluegrass. Though I agree you can play any type of music on any mandolin, the bowlback for me is more easily played when sitting down. Some...

    Re: fast-acting pocket audio recorder

I guess there will be a few seconds boot-up time, like in this video:

    Re: fast-acting pocket audio recorder

I'd agree that a modern phone would seem best suited in that it is highly portable and likely to be available when needed.

I just checked my Zoom H2n. Again, this is quite bulky to carry around....

Re: Light vs. Medium vs. Heavy Picks

When I first started playing, (sometime in the 1960s) we played folk-tunes, and it occurred to me once that out of our entire repertoire, only one tune made use of the G-string (I think it was a...

Re: Light vs. Medium vs. Heavy Picks

The material is important too. Thin doesn't necessarily equate with flexible (though it might).

    Re: Attic Find

Don't the strings protect the fingerboard, leaving the spaces between the strings to become worn? That would indicate all six pairs of strings used, giving five gaps which get worn.

Amazingly, the serial number of mine is the very next number.

Re: Need advice on selling Flatiron mandolin

Regarding strings, you should find a label inside, look through the sound-hole, right up underneath the fretboard. Mine recommends string gauges 0.010 - 0.013 - 0.024 - 0.036 though I tend to use...

Re: Need advice on selling Flatiron mandolin

Yes, mine is a Flatiron 1DC. I bought it new in 1994, think it cost (with hard case) about $460 at that time. Of course the value of currency has shifted with inflation since then (about $750-ish...

Yes, I hope you didn't mind my little comment. Actually I'm with you, I like to see the wood, even unfinished wood has a beauty. The finish can bring out what is in the wood, nowadays I tend to veer...

  17. Re: Amateurish string change execution - can I keep, or is it rui

With the wound strings (G and D) there is usually plenty of leeway for slackening off the tension, reposition or trim if required, then re-tighten the tuners. It should be ok to do this so long as...

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

One thing which has been made easier with the advent of readily-available electronic tuners, is the ability to join in a jam at the drop of a hat. These days I just take my seat, pick up my mandolin,...

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

Have to agree, I'm fussy about each pair being in unison. Even if both are off by a small amount, but are together, it still sounds better to me than even a tiny difference in each pair. It does...

    Re: Old Mandolin Restorer's Dilemma

My thought is - don't trust a photograph to tell what the thing actually looks like. A good portion of such photographs are taken using a camera's own built-in flash, or harsh spotlighting in shops....

Speaking of tuner apps, I tried a few, my current favourite is the A4tune Guitar and Violin Tuner. I thought using an app was just a gimmick, but it suits me really well - in a quiet environment. Set...

Re: Advice on how to learn sheet music?

Since you already know how to read sheet music, you're halfway there. The other half is to learn the names of each note on the mandolin fretboard. There are lots of diagrams, I learned from a book,...
  23. Re: You all downloaded the free mando summit app from Northfield

Well, something changed, not sure what. I couldn't find any settings to change related to sound. I restarted my phone a couple of times during the day. Now I'm getting sound with the videos. Next...
  24. Re: You all downloaded the free mando summit app from Northfield

Interesting - but it didn't seem complete. The sheet music section was great. Mandolin tuner, worked about one-third of the time. (No sound mostly). Videos, no sound at all.

    Re: "Powerful/Loud!"

Well, in my mind, I'm attempting to play music, but it's probably the case that I am simply generating a noise level a lot of the time. :)
