Re: Mandolin As A New Direction

I was only hoping to encourage CBFrench that he shouldn't have any regrets about the time he spent and will continue to spend playing music. Im sorry you're living with regrets Ranald.

Re: Mandolin As A New Direction

I'll always remember what my Baseball coach in JR High said to me when I considered quitting halfway through the season.

"You'll never look back and say; I wish I would have never played so much...

    Re: Good pick for starters

Here's a perfect example of how what works for some doesn't work for everyone. I have a hard time holding on to (spinning) and getting any tone out of the Primetone picks.

Re: Where did you find your last mando?

These are places I look. My last one came from GC's used site.

Re: Where did you find your last mando?

Cafe sponsors, Local shops (getting less and less of those), Reverb, Local CL, Ebay, SGW, Used GC, local pawn shops, etc.

    Re: Pick Hold Issues

These things get easier. Just keep practicing :)

In the mean time, some sticky stuff (like the Gorilla snot, or even just licking your fingers a bit), or a pick with some holes in it (Wegan tf)...

Re: Total Newbee looking for info

I'm not sure how busy your house is (kids, pets running around) or of the humidity, especially in the Winter, but a nice, sturdy stand is good accessory. I've found that if my instruments are easily...
  10. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

True, you got me there, Sir :)

I guess the same could be said about the Seagull S8 if thats your thing.
  11. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

You'll have to re-read my comments. I said:

"I've only ever seen those, factory installed, on lesser mandolins."

It's not necessarily a bad thing to have a pre-installed preamp pickup....
  12. Re: Allen tailpiece - does the felt mute the sound or not?

It's a harmonic suppressor to cut unwanted noise. Use if you feel it necessary.
  13. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

In the fourth picture I can see what looks to be the outside square housing for a preamp. I've only ever seen those, factory installed, on lesser mandolins.

Unless the price was real low I'd walk.
  14. Re: Blues Mandolin - Big Boss Man - John Hamlett Mandolin (!)

    Right on! Sounds great
  15. Re: Sierra Hull - “Lonesome Moonlight Waltz” (Bill Monroe) at Sun

Thanks for sharing! I wish the surf would quite down so we could hear the music better.
  16. Re: Walnut Back and Sides Spruce Flat Top Tone

Nice! You'll have to report back how you like the Walnut.

    Congratulations and happy picking :)

Thx! I'll watch it tomorrow night :)
  19. Re: Walnut Back and Sides Spruce Flat Top Tone

I was worried about lack of volume when selecting tone woods for my Red Valley (Mahogany, spruce) but really wanted the darker, mellow tones of Mahogany. Not a worry, it still has lungs!

You may want to branch out before you become an old stump :))

    I'm guessing it's this one.

Bummed I missed it! I hope your event went well :)
  23. Re: multi-instrumentalists: how do you manage your time?

At church I'm scheduled for different instruments (bass, electric, acoustic, mandolin) every week so I focus on my parts leading up to it.

In my coffee house band years ago I switched between...
  24. Re: Contemporary Christian Music with Mandolin Solo???

Haha, yup! I hear that all the time :)) Or, "is that a ukulele?" :)

    Seasons- Hillsong
    Reckless Love- Cory Asbury
