  1. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

There's a music store by me that does very good work in-store, but that is rare. There's also a really good luthier who works out of his house by me, but I don't know if he does many mandolins....
  2. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

I have that e-book. Thanks. There's also a great video on how to do it yourself, but I wanted it professionally done.
  3. Re: Where does the strap go on a Strad-o-lin (no end button)?

I see from a previous thread that some folks install one below the tailpiece. I may try that.
  4. Where does the strap go on a Strad-o-lin (no end button)?

My Strad-o-lin now sounds and looks good, but I don't know how to attach a strap to it. What do others do? :)
  5. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

So it came back all set up, oiled and sounding pretty good. The tuners are even facing the right direction! Worth the expense, as good craftsman service usually is.
  6. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

Yes, a good set-up is important, but can we be more specific?
  7. Re: Anyone use a Fender Mustang GT40 amplifier?

The Fender modelling amps give you the option of manual settings. The presets are just a quick base if you're looking to emulate a specific popular sound. I previously had a Vox amp that didn't.
  8. Re: Anyone use a Fender Mustang GT40 amplifier?

Thanks. This was just a concern I read in a few reviews of the product. As noted, I have no experience with it. Hopefully, I'll find it in a local store to try out, though not the firmware update.
  9. Re: How to make your own A-style strap from paracord

    Now fixed.
  10. How to make your own A-style strap from paracord

I made a few of these for myself over the years and figure I would share what I've learned over time. I've never had an issue with this design, but do check the slip knots. If you have a great...
  11. Anyone use a Fender Mustang GT40 amplifier?

These things look cool. I like that they use smaller speakers and a closed back to be good at both instrument amplification and playback of music, so one can jam with recordings. Looking for...

    Re: Thick Picks?

Vinny Smith's outdone himself with that one! Heck, I'd give it a try; If it's too hard to use I can always mount it on a cuff link. :)
  13. What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

Granted, I live on Long Island where prices are high, but I was wondering what it runs. I'm having a guy invert my tuners so they turn in the right direction, put on a new set of J74s and adjusting...

    Re: Thick Picks?

I just don't get the appeal of thick picks like the Dawg or Golden Gate. Sounds good when Dawg uses one, but for me it sounds thin. I much prefer an old Red Bear or Wegen or Blue Chip. I'd rather use...

    Re: Straps

Thanks atsunrise! I have not experienced any of these problems but it's good to be aware of the risks. I'm currently working on a strad-o-lin project, but after that I'll probably get the Lakotah...

    Re: Straps

I don't own one yet, but I like the looks of the Lakota Leather straps, made from elkhide. In the mean time, I made my own for my A model from paracord. It was quite simple and it works great. A...

Put it on a slicer and it would be a mandolin on a mandolin.

Re: Just got a Strad-o-lin as a gift...

A childhood friend was cleaning out his uncle's apartment and came across the mandolin. Knowing I play, he figured I would know what to do with it; I would be honest if it was something like a Loar...

If it does outplay my Eastman when renovated, I'll have to consider keeping it. Depending on the cost of renovation I may sell it or see about donating it, but let's see and hear how it goes through...

    Just got a Strad-o-lin as a gift...

Cool. A friend was cleaning out his uncle's apartment and he came across an old Strad-o-lin A-model mandolin, no inside label. Knowing I play, he just gave it to me hoping it would either be played...
