Re: The virus, the economy, mandolins and you

We've lost around 2k. Likely to lose some more.

The bigger thing is we are "sheltering" at home with 3 kids two of whom have severe autism. They rely on routine and well....not so much of that...

    Re: Shout out to Collings

After a long search it came down to a Northfield NF5S or a Collings MT. Both are great value and I suspect I would have been happy with either. I've played and heard a lot of MTs since then but no...

    Re: Gig bag for mandola?

You might check with Gold Tone. They make all different size instruments including mandolas, big ukes, short tenors, and funky "folkternative instruments". One of their gig bags might be close....

    Re: Gig bag for mandola?

Here's what I did. With the adjustable neck support and the memory foam velcroed in I can adjust it to fit many different instruments. Cost around $90 if I remember....

    Re: Capo for Octave/Bouzouki

I like the Thalia. They tend to have a lot of sales and B stock so not as expensive as they look at first glance.
+You can match the radius of the instrument with inserts so they work for...

Re: Peghead Nation vs OAIM for ITM Lessons

If you're just looking for Mandolin I think Marla's Peghead Nation would be perfect.

If you're a multi-instrumentalist and/or singer OAIM is a tremendous value because you get all the courses for...

Re: Home Recording - best bang for buck

It's a great time to get into home recording. I use an Imac as my home computer so my path was:

    Garage Band: Free.
    Logic Pro X: $199.

Apogee Duet (look for open box or used for around...

Re: Playing Mandola - Tips & Tricks

I think if you spend time with the mandola you'll find your way into it. It's kind of versatile. It can be played like a big mando but it doesn't have to be.

I got really interested in Brian...

    Your playing sounds great
    The instrument sounds great
and man that KM 84 really captures the sound on all your recordings. A single mic with no processing it sounds amazing.

A little thread necromancy but I have some new info.

  18. Re: Gold Tone OM-800 vs Trinity College TM 325

Since you indicated that both instruments are local, go try them out.

Either one would probably be a decent starter octave but, as Multidon points out, there are different versions of TCs and Gold...

    Re: Mandolin or Octave Mandolin

I'll offer a different perspective. Octave or bouzouki work just fine with guitar. Play the instrument you're drawn to.

If your plan is to mostly strum first position chords, then it's true...

Are XTs like Ejs that stay in tune better and last longer or are they designed to have different tonal qualities?

    Re: XT D'Addario Mandolin Strings?

How do the XTs differ from the EJ and EXP series given that all three are phosphor bronze. They seem like a straight upgrade or is there some reason to still go with the EJs?
