Re: old Flatiron, old guy, some thoughts

I sent my A5-1 to Lou Stiver and he did a radius and refret. Didn't take long. He did great work (he's done that for me on other mandolins).

Not sure it really matters though. I also have a...

    Re: Alvarez a400

then again, somebody may have put j74 on a j73 instrument? There was a period of well made Alvarez. I have an A100 that was just great. All wooden binding and hand made. I think the a400 I had...
  3. Re: Buying myself my first mandolin for my 30th. Need help

get the best A5 you can afford. Classical? Just check out Ekaterina Skliar on YouTube! She plays a Gibson A5. They were made to play everything. Not just bluegrass!

    Re: Fret Size Opinions

if you have a heavy left hand, the large fret wires will lead to sharpening the note v. the smaller.
If you are accurate and make clean notes with the small stuff, you'll surely have no problems...

    Re: Informal Poll

I would have paid $5k for a Gibson Sam Bush then as I would now. Bonus points if it's signed by Derrington or Harvey!

That remains the only f-model that I'd like. (Closet fan boy from decades...

Re: Just bought my first mandolin!

re: Mandolin-looking objects. You want solid wood and hand-carved. Plywood mandolins steam-pressed to give an arched-looking instrument are cheap and look, "Right." They are just different. Solid...

Re: looking for a travel mando

I've carried my pancake Flatiron all over the place! Then again, I've carried my 1920 A3 all over the place. (I'm a geologist.)

    They both have wide(r) nuts.

Dave Cohen compensated the nut on my 1920 A3. That fixed my intonation problem.

Just love your new Gil! Well done! Sounds great too!

  15. Re: Want flat fretboard, at least 1 1/8" nut width. Suggestions?

I'd imagine that for $400 or $500 bucks you could sand the radius out and get a refret?

I'd shoot for a Sam Bush Gibson, but I'm a fan boy!

I'd love one of Hamlett's mandolins!

Re: Thomastik medium on Eastman MD305?

yes the Heavy set has a wound A string. Thomastik strings last a long time. Then again, I'm not a big string changer!

I use the medium set on my flat-top (not always, but they are well suited for...

    Re: Compulsive purchase- Flatiron 1N

Son in law has my original '84. Gave it to him as a wedding present!

Immediately bought an '83. And, yes, it does have the five-latch case!

    Still love these mandolins!
