Re: Ellis, Pava, or Collings MT2

These are all great mandolins... so comes down to personal preference. They each have somewhat different 'textures'. You can't really go terribly wrong with any of them. I am most partial to Ellis,...

You can't pick 'Bluegrass Breakdown' on your car though, can you? :mandosmiley:

Re: Need info on a Barcus-Berry pickup

Treat as any other piezo transducer. These tend to work best into a very high impedance input. Encountered one of that model paired with a Baggs preamp and it sounded about how you'd expect.

Re: The end of my playing days.

Sad to hear this. I corresponded with Ivan back and forth over many years. He will be missed. A true gentleman and a fine picker.

    RIP.

    Re: Sennheiser ME64 + K6 powering module

Yes.. good mics are one thing than can last ages if looked after. Most tech these days is practically out-of-date within a very short time, but good mics just keep going. I have a Sennheiser MKH416...

    Sennheiser ME64 + K6 powering module

I've never seen these mentioned here, as usually, they are most popular as part of recording rigs for video or broadcast use. The K6 system is based around a power/preamp module which is purchased...
  7. Re: Gibson A5G, 1986, Nashville, Derrington ??

Highly unlikely there ever was any 'neck repair'. It is just a cover story to account for the fact that the neck is nothing like a genuine A5G neck!
  8. Re: Gibson A5G, 1986, Nashville, Derrington ??

That looks like it might be a stripped down, refinished Asian import which has then been 'faked up' with the rather audacious label and poorly-done headstock. Shocking, actually.

    Re: Adventures in Clip-On Mics

This is an issue with all instrument mounted mics.

The thing I found was that when using them you need a different playing technique to compensate. Varying volume by picking intensity rather than...

    Re: Adventures in Clip-On Mics

I have had no issue with transmitted physical noise from the pick-guard. I do, however, always use the variable low-cut filters on the console (QSC Touchmix 16) to 'edit out' much below 196Hz. I can...

    Re: Mandolin Recording Mic Setup

    Is the room treated?

That is one of the most under-rated but important factors of all in getting a good result.

Mic position is next. Try moving the mic(s) around while checking the results. If...

Re: Old Ellis F5 vs New Ellis F5

Just get a nice case... then play the heck out of it. I would not take one "up the jungle", but I do take mine with me every time I perform. Would not go anywhere to play without it.

TC Polytune. These are a seriously fine tuner!

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

'Hi Z' is the correct technical term as 'Z' is the formula for impedance in electronic calculations.

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

Orchid DI's are really excellent. Their technical performance is up there with the very best at a fraction of the price.
I've used their stuff for years. Never had a failure.

    Re: Mic preamp for condenser

The problem with the Ui16 preamps is the chip they used. There certainly IS a link between the "hiss" level and having phantom power engaged, however... it only manifests as you crank the gain right...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

You can certainly go from a good 'acoustic' preamp direct into a high quality full-range powered speaker. The QSC K10's and K8's are ideal for this. It essentially gives you an all-in-one 'acoustic...

    Re: Mic preamp for condenser

The Triton Fethead PHANTOM does work fine with the Ui16. Solves the excess noise issue. I have tested that myself.

Re: Best Bluegrass Band Single Microphone?

Sound reinforcement is a relatively undemanding application, in most respects. Hence, you can get very good sound from an SM57/58 (used correctly). Studio sound, and film/broadcast sound tends to...

Re: Best Bluegrass Band Single Microphone?

I think one reason the KSM's are popular is because they are very tough, well-engineered and stand up well to outdoor/live use. They are also very consistent. All mics have their own 'sonic...

    Re: Signal Channel

    1) Good condenser mic on a stand (preferred) straight into a QSC Touchmix.

    2) Audio Technica ATM-350 (second choice) also straight into the QSC.

    4) AKG C411 contact mic (only in really bad/loud...
