Re: Dix Bruce - Rest in Peace

Bruce taught a camp I attended once. He was very patient with me when I asked him to explain just exactly what he meant by "Swing Mandolin".

He also spent time with my son on guitar, and he...

Re: Nice Looking F4 at Music Folk

Back when I was still playing in public (pre-covid) I always used my A-1. It is louder than my F-4, but the F-4 has a better sound for playing to myself. The A-1 could fill a room with sound, but...

    Here you go:

It’s 1913 according to Spahn, but I was told by Gryphon’s that it is from 1915.

Re: Nice Looking F4 at Music Folk

JourneyBear! Congratulations on the acquisition. There are few instruments more satisfying than the F-4 mandolin. Beautiful to hold and behold, and of course to play!

Re: Lost bit of binding, 1915 F-4

Sorry to take so long to answer: I've been traveling.

According to the son, (Actually the grandson of the original buyer) His grandmother bought the mandolin for her daughter. She played it...

    Re: Memorizing a song

    Another vote for singing along.

Years ago when my daughter was learning piano from Anna Magdelena's Notebook she was having a terrible time with them. So she and I sat down and made up really...

Re: Learning mandolin and music theory?

One thing about "music theory" you should know when you start is that what we call "music theory" is mostly nomenclature for the the actual performance of music. For example, in music theory we talk...

    Re: 1925 H1 Mandola

    Very nice. I have a 1916-1917 H-1 myself.
Have you noticed that the beat up old mandolins (and mandolas) seem to sound better than the same make, model, and year, that are more like museum...

Re: Lost bit of binding, 1915 F-4

Now that I look at it closely, I concur.

I coated the wood with warmed hide glue, and then the piece. I positioned them and let it set for a bit with pressure, then I clamped it down so that it...

Re: Lost bit of binding, 1915 F-4

Thank you for the advice. I plan to use a regular furniture clamp. It is wide enough to press against the piece and the opposite side of the body just perfectly. I'll probably get to the task over...

Re: Lost bit of binding, 1915 F-4

I haven't repaired a mandolin before, but I repair Remotely Operated Vehicles, and they are pretty much the same, aren't they?

Re: Lost bit of binding, 1915 F-4

I don't think it is ivoroid. The reason I say that is that both this piece and its counterpart on the bottom are slightly darker than the binding. If it is bone or ivory, the materials are similar,...

Re: Lost bit of binding, 1915 F-4

    Hello, John!

I found the piece. it appears that the glue just dried up and it fell off when bumped. I just had to find when and where I bumped it.

Any suggestions on what kind of glue to use....

Re: Lost bit of binding, 1915 F-4

It's not likely it has ever been repaired before. It came to me from the son of the original owner, Jeanette Greene, to whom it was given as a gift about 100 years ago. She never played it after...

Lost bit of binding, 1915 F-4

Re: Gibson F2 and F4 mandolins.

I've never bought a mandolin with its market value, now or potentially in the future, as a factor in my decision making. I bought an F-4 after playing it for about 6 months when it was on loan to me...
  23. Re: How has the mandolin changed your guitar playing?

I have played guitar since I was 15. I started mandolin at age 45 and I started violin at 50. Now at 66, mandolin, mandola, and fiddle are my go-to instruments. I do have a couple of guitars,...

    Re: Old vs New Oval

I recently A and B'd my Coombe Mandola from 2009 with my 'teens Gibson H-1. It's a tough call: the Gibson is louder and has a more "hollow" sound--some call it "tubby" but I don't think that is the...
