  1. Re: Calace, "Notturno Cielo Stellato": Robert Margo, mandola in G

What a lovely piece. I really enjoy the sound of classical music on the octave. Thank you
  2. Re: Role of Octave/mandola/MCello in non classical music

I play celtic and early music and the OM has become my instrument of choice for it. I play primarily melody and find that it adds an audible voice in mixed jams in a way that mandolin doesn't. I feel...

Re: Any Penny Whistle Players here

I play a susato low whistle. I would probably start learning on the regular whistle first though. The low whistle has a long stretch between the finger holes

    Re: Replacement Tailpiece

There is a strap button that screws on to the pin that goes into the body. The pin appears to be a non functioning pick-up plug in. It will accept my standard size amp cord.

    Re: Replacement Tailpiece

That seems to be the case. The end pin on this mandolin is about 1/8 - 3/16" further away from the top than what the Golden Gate tailpiece will fit.

    Replacement Tailpiece

    Hi,
I have an older Trinity College octave mandolin that needs a new tailpiece. I broke one of the g string hooks during my last string change. I ordered a Golden Gate Tailpiece on the suggestion...

    Re: Lets Talk Eastman Line.

I used to have a 315 that I thought was really good. It was extremely playable, and the intonation was great. It had a lovely mellow tone. I wouldn't have minded a little more bass, but it always...

    Re: Roosebeck balalaika opinions?

I've played a Roosebeck lute and two of their baroquleles. One of the baroquleles played fine, and its owner uses it and gigs with it a lot. The other one had very high action and a nut sharp enough...

    Re: Celtic/Irish Mandolins

I like a-style flat-tops. They seem to have a longer sustain than carved tops which is particularly useful when adding ornamentation when playing. I really like my Big Muddy flat top. It's loud...

    Re: Red Valley Mandolins

I have only heard recordings, but they sure sound nice. Especially the larger bodied variant. There's one for sale near me, but it's two hours away so I haven't the trip.

What's the tuning and scale length?
  12. Re: thinking about getting a oval hole mandolin

I preferred my Eastman over all of the Kentucky's I've played. Mine was a 315, I've not yet played an Eastman oval hole though.

    Re: Brazilian rosewood for mandolins?

You see it on some mandolins made for Celtic music. I played a Trinity College TM-450 with rosewood sides and back. It might add a dry, woody note to the tone without creating excess bark. It seems...

Re: My low string(g) won't stop buzzing

I agree with everything that has been said so far, here are some more ideas. It's important to figure out where the buzz is coming from. There are a lot of things that can make a mandolin buzz. It...

Thanks for sharing, I've been excited to hear this mandolin since you posted the first pics. It's lovely and sounds great!
  17. Re: Is it a good choice pick a Neapolitan mandolin for Irish Musi

I play primarily Celtic music. I have a bowlback and also a flat top. I've performed and also been to sessions with both. Both work for the music, and no one has complained about my choice of...

Re: Alternating Melody and drone notes

You might check out Evan Marshall on YouTube. He fills in his melody with some really great harmonies that use up the unused beats. It may be different than what you're doing, but it might give you...

Re: taking a break at the jam

    Re: The South Wind

    Hi s1m0n,

The section in the middle is purely improvisational. I play through the piece twice, then I kind of sing the song in my head and play something to go along with it and then blend back...

Re: What makes a classical mandolin?

I'll second, or maybe fifth lol, the desire for a wide fingerboard. I would also like a built in pick up, that would be classier than a mic. Personally, I'm not fond of the shorter scale though....
