    Re: Persimmon mandolins?

Very nice! Does the persimmon tree have any symbolic meanings in North Carolina?
I seem to remember something about the tree in California, a film maybe.

    Re: Warm up song

I agree about the mechanical issue. For me I think this arrives when I flatten the rhythm out, no emphasis and no rubato, and with good timing. Funnily enough I think timing issues can actually make...

    Re: Warm up song

Liberty in D major seems to arrive at my finger tips, recently at least.
Thatís a tune, and Eyes on the Prize, Bruce Springsteen version, is a song I often begin without having to think about it...

    Re: Contemporary Pumpkin Tops?

I think Fylde made one too, delicate orange/reddish with a beautiful pale blue-turquoise inlay.

Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction

About the red mark, yes I agree, the only thing I can imagine is that an electric pickup was fitted inside the body and used to get hot?
It seems like it’s under the finish? So the mark would run...

Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction

I have a question, would it be possible to sand down the top and have the mandolin as a natural/orange-reddish colour?

  8. Re: Advice/Suggestions on characteristics of an ideal mandolin st

The hole was already there, I could have just punched through anothrr smaller hole for one line of paracord but maybe it would be more stress on the leather.
    The knot’s another simple fisherman’s....
  9. Re: Advice/Suggestions on characteristics of an ideal mandolin st

350 pound breaking strain paracord with a tight fisherman’s slip knot. Completely secure.

Me too, buckles are out, as are wide shoulder straps -don’t need them and when I put the mando in a case I...

Re: Always use a strap? Even when seated?

I like that the mando is light.
I use mainly old black or thin leather camera straps from second hand shops or multicoloured 1/2inch flat climbing strap material with paracord at the ends.
    You...
  11. Re: Suggestions for Crooked and/or Polytonal Tunes?

Hereís another fun tune, itís not exactly crooked but in 7/8 time. (Think: Reel, jig; Reel, jig) (D-DU, DUD; D-DU, DUD)
Difficult, steep learning curve like tremolo but really improves your rhythm...

Re: Mandola with octave mandolin strings?

I’ve been looking for a large body, but short scale instrument, maybe it’s better to tune it to something other than GDAE or CGDA to still get good tone.
  13. Re: Is this a chord? first fret, D AND A, then G&E on 3rd fret?

On my octave I’d definitely use a capo if I have to play in this key, on the other hand the key of Eb does have some real advantages over other keys in terms of certain moody feelings, having the...

    Re: Memorizing a song

I read notation ok, but prefer TAB.
I’m actually quite lucky though because my eyesight is going.
I’ll read my newest tune but since my eyesight isn’t so good I have to use my ears and memory. I...

    Brother Trip Foot

Here’s a lovely tune I just had to share.
    It’s September Tune a Month on melodeon.net

Probably as Mark says, but another possibility could be that mandolintab is great resource, and has many users who come over from thesession.org

Most tunes have different regional variations and...
  17. Re: Suggestions for Crooked and/or Polytonal Tunes?

Red Rocking Chair is sort of crooked.

Here are some versions to make you proud to be a musician!! :)

    (Warning, no mando content)

Nicely played, yes the tone is great.
BTW, you can also post your setting of the tune here

Re: Hello, I am new here

    Hey Zeek welcome to MandolinCafe!
Here’s a cool tune for you, by Larry Unger. It’s very scale-like, so great for practicing D major, probably the most common key.
You can print it out with TAB at...

  21. Re: OM closed position fingering and pinky and FFCP

I did a lot of scale practice with FFCP but found that I played tunes mostly at the open position.

One thing that encouraged me to make the jump between the two systems was shifting exercises (you...

Re: Seeking Octave Mandolin Plans and Advice

I’m looking for a mandola/tenor neck to attach to a big, nice looking bodhran, but that’s another story. :)
  23. Re: OM closed position fingering and pinky and FFCP

The thing I found is that anything over about seventeen inches then it gets harder to play mando style fingering. I play 20.5 inches in mando style but it does take a lot of practice and I’m more...

Re: Mando vs. Mandola for swing jazz

Octave mandolin with capo. Or cittern tuned down a tone?
Semi acoustic might help too, using magnetic pickups and extra low action.
