  3. Are Those Old, Pre-Gibson Flatiron Mandos Really That Good?

I'm going to be coming into some money, and I'm looking at possibly upgrading in the mando department, even though I suck and have a mando I really like.

For years I've been hearing raves about...

    Re: Spinal Tap - Stonehenge

Hi, Everyone. It sounds like most of you haven't heard, but they're doing a Spinal Tap sequel, to be released on the 40th anniversary of the original movie. This is not a prank; it's the real thing....

Re: Who is Behind "The Loar" Company?

Charles, hi. Thanks so much for your response. I'm glad to know about Econo Silver Angel. I guess I gave everyone the impression I was in the market for a new mando. I was mainly just curious about...

Re: Who is Behind "The Loar" Company?

Thanks to all of you for your info and responses.

I was mainly just curious about the company. I have a J. Bouvier F-hole that I really love, and also a solid backup with an Eastman MD-315. From...

Who is Behind "The Loar" Company?

I'm researching getting a new mandolin, roughly in the $1000 range. I'm a bit of a newb, but I keep stumbling across "The Loar" products.

I see they're out of the Bay Area. Are they related to the...

    Re: potato chip casein picks

Dan, hi. I know how to do this and have done it dozens of times.

Let me know whether you'd prefer me to post it in the thread or, if not, please PM me and I'll go through it with you.

    It's...
  10. Re: which is better mass produced mando...Loar or Eastman

I have entry-level Eastman F-style that is pretty hard to beat.

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

If you're talking guitar and not mandolin, I love the little D'Addario soundhole clip-on tuners. It's the same model as their headstock one, with a different clip.

Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations

    Wow, some terrific suggestions here.

I didn't have time to read the whole thread, but the Mussel Shoals doc is an absolute must-see.

  14. Re: Matt Miller Picks - New to the Pick Market - Great pick/price

The pictures are a little hard to see, but I believe it's a material called Torlon, a high-performance plastic that's similar to Vespel and is used in aerospace and such. Haven't played one, but...

Re: help me build a pick set

Daniel, sounds like you're on a pick adventure.

I'd second the emotion on Dunlop 207s and Primetones, plus Ultex, then Wegen, Golden Gate and Dawg. That oughta keep you busy for a while.

Re: How much do you practice?

Mando -- not at all. Guitar -- a bit. I used to play more in song circles, before COVID.

    Re: Again with the picks

Despite my username, I play more guitar than mando. For the money, I really like the Wegen Bluegrassers and Triangles. I confess I haven't done an A and B with them versus. I tend to stick with one...
  20. Re: Are the Flatiron F-5 Mandos As Good As I've Heard?

  21. Re: Tonedexter wavemaps for mando and mic position...

Interesting discussion. I generally avoid electronics of any kind in the signal path. I prefer to just buy the best pickup I can afford and run clean. That's me. YMMV.

Hi. Curious about these Flatiron F-5s I hear so much about.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not in a buying position at the moment, no matter how good the deal. Please don't PM me about your Flatiron or any...

Re: What are you playing for the holidays?

My wife is a great piano player, so this is her season.

We have a tradition on Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's not really an official holiday until my wife and her aunt sing "Fat Bottom Girls"...
