    Re: RIP Stonewall Jackson

Saw him with my Dad when I was just a kid. His voice stuck with me, we now do 'Washed My hands in Muddy Water' often.

    A sad part of life.......

    Re: Mandolin Gift Suggestions

Fancy picks are always cool. Blue Chip, Red Bear and D'Addario Chris Thile models are just a few names.
  3. Re: Not able to view (Most!) videos in eg social groups on MC

Nope to the first video, yes to the second. Matches what I saw in randomly looking at videos, yes to some no to others.

    No problem on Mac.

    Thanks for the analysis.

Re: I am weary let me rest

Google the title plus ‘sheet music’. The library of congress has images from the original sheet music. It’s in the key of E, but if you read notation your could play the melody.

Re: What's your new fiddle tune?

Didn't take this, but alll of the classes and workshops I've done with Matt have been superb. Finally persuaded my buddies to take a class and they are overjoyed.

  7. Re: Gibson Master Model vs Custom Master Model - advice please

Assuming you're buying an instrument to play it, if you don't like the sound now, don't buy it. If you think other strings, pick or different room will enhance the sound, good luck to you.

    If its...

    Re: Shell Chords on mandolin

Since your chords are closed, they’re movable, but your descriptions are odd to me.

Your G7 is correct starting from the E string, your C7 (CEBb) is fine but an awkward fingering, your A7 is just...

Re: Better machines give better sustain?

Not really, sound is quite measurable.

An uncontrolled observation is just an anecdote, can't be repeated or validated by another independent observer.

But it is correct to say that my playing...

Re: Ever heard of a "guitar chair?!"

The seating position for guitar v Mando is quite different. For me, a straight backed chair would be awful.

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

    Sort of.

Most people don’t realize that the new pickguard bracket allowed the pickguard to act as an external Virsi-type device, hence the enhanced tone.
  17. Re: Cheap beater mandolins that play, for leaving in the car etc?

Given the thefts from cars lately, perhaps having a tempting target for the unknown thief may not be the wisest idea.

    it could happen..........
  18. Re: Espresso Swing - Jordan Ramsey mandolin

Really nice. Such fun with the clarinet. Great to see you playing. We're watching your student, Kaden Hurst, as much as we can here in pdxland.

  20. Re: Cheap beater mandolins that play, for leaving in the car etc?

As a tradesman, I bought high quality tools, used them as often as needed, ie, daily, and tried not to trash them as they were often expensive and couldn’t be replaced in the middle of the work day. ...

  22. Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

As the responses indicate, the answer is 'it depends'.

However you finger something, if its clean, smooth and up to speed, its correct.

  23. Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

Or you could play B (d string 9th fret). C# (d string 11th fret) and G ( A string 10th fret). Finger 1-2-1. Depends on what comes before and after.

    Just a thought.

Re: Tuning up a Traditional Brekke Bridge

I would think reaching out directly to Vern Brekke would a good solution.

Btw, Bruce Weber put one on my Absaroka and it also raised the action to ‘mostly unplayable’. I put the original Brekke...
