Re: How to combat memorization tendencies?

I think the key for me is the difference between memorizing the song vs memorizing the notes. The song is the sum of the groove/rhythm, the melody and the lyrics and the emotions that accompany them....

Re: How do you play “split” beat

Being the two outside strings I suppose you could pluck them both with thumb and pinky of the strumming hand… but I’d probably just strum it and hope for the best :)

Is there something wrong with the neck currently?

    Re: Yet Another CF Mandolin?

I was planning to try the other direction, medium plus Sam Bush monel, to see how that sounds.
But I have had no issues switching string types on my Morris which has no truss rod, so I didn’t...

Re: Looking for a good mid-level octave mandolin..

I ended up with a Pono 23” and a converted Eastman (guitar) 23.5” GBOMs at a very reasonable price (each less than $1000) from the classifieds. Both are excellent to my hearing. I was targeting a...

    Re: Yet Another CF Mandolin?

Where is the statement that the carbon timber has a different tone? I had assumed it was just a cosmetic difference. If there is a significant tonal difference I might consider upgrading.

    I did...

Re: Best way to test preamp sounds at home?

My recommendation would be to go ahead and set up your mixer and one or more PA speaker and set up a GoPro or other recording method to actually hear what it sounds like out at audience position. I...

    Re: Yet Another CF Mandolin?

I had that same thought. I still like the idea of being able to plug directly into a portable speaker or house PA without needing my pedals while traveling so I think I’ll go with the preamp and hope...

Re: Does anyone recognize this strap?

Glad you finally found your oval! It took me a minute to remember that we swapped BRW pics a year ago. Not many ovals out there!

Re: Does anyone recognize this strap?

I don’t know about the strap, but as the happy owner of a BRW two-point oval, I’d love to see the side-by-side pictures of both mandolins :)

    Re: Yet Another CF Mandolin?

The post about taking a mandolin on a ski trip has me thinking I’m glad I’ve got one of these on order. I think I’ll bring it along on an Alaska fishing trip this summer.
  13. Re: Could I leave mando in car in winter while skiing?

Space blankets provide almost no insulation. They reflect body heat, but that isn’t going to help your mandolin :)

Re: gold tone octave vs eastman octave

I’d love to try a shorter scale length sometime. I am playing a 23.5” GBOM (converted from a 3/4 size Eastman guitar) that I love, and a 23” Pono that I also love but sadly neglect. 20” sounds like...
  15. Re: Could I leave mando in car in winter while skiing?

Perfect use case for a carbon fiber mandolin :)

I had my octave along on an ice fishing trip a couple of weeks ago and had no choice but to leave it in the car the last day while we fished a half...

    Re: playing late and drinking

There’s no question that skills are best when completely unimpaired.
However, relaxation and lack of inhibition can contribute to the overall musicality - if the performer is relaxed and having fun...

Re: Is this App Already Invented?

A former bandmate has sent me a few videos recorded with Acapella and it works well but functions as described above. I downloaded the free trial and then discovered the relatively high subscription...
  18. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

I have the screw-mounted micro tuners on a couple of my mandolins but I switched to unitunes on the ones I play every day, just so much easier to use and easier to see.

Re: Pedal novice question re: preamp pedal

I think you’re on the right track, Mark. I was using my ToneDexter for both mandolin and octave by switching the wireless transmitter back and forth (using a wavemap for the mandolin and bypass for...

    Re: Yet Another CF Mandolin?

Today the video link is showing as “private” and I can’t view it. Is anyone else having that problem? I unfortunately didn’t have time to play it yesterday.

Edit: yup, I see that they fixed it.

    Re: Who sells a Flat-top Guitar-body Octave?

  24. Re: Tuning mandola or octave mandolin with 2nd course an octave h

This thread prompted me to try this on my GBOM. I like it a lot for rhythm playing, jury is still out for picking but two of my frequent listeners said they really liked it this weekend.
    I used a...

Re: Tuner recomendation for full sun
