Re: GIROUARD F4 Delivered Today !!!

Bruce (Spruce) got a hold of a cedar log that was fished out of bog after being in there who knows how long. After it cured, it was really great tonewood and Max built a bunch of instruments out of...

Re: GIROUARD F4 Delivered Today !!!

I don't know if that's what he's referring to either, but most people don't expect flamed/figured wood on a top.

Congrats on the beautiful F4. I have a Girouard mandola with the bog cedar top. A...

Re: GIROUARD F4 Delivered Today !!!

That top is figured/flamed like Jill's POC Girouard A oval. That's figure in the wood, not a finish problem.

My quarantune: Little Star from the Compton/Blake Gallop to Georgia CD of Narmour and Smith tunes. Crooked.

  7. Re: Do You Play ALL of Your Mandolins Regularly?

I play the 2 mandolins (Heiden A5, Stanley F5) regularly, but not the mandola or octave. Those 2 don't get nearly enough playing time.

    Re: Live From Home

Now what blackface A5 is Andrew playing? Emily's going to stab him in the face with that bow. :disbelief:

    Re: Happy Birthday Norman Blake

Love everything Norman does. Truly a National Treasure. If you have heard the Mike Compton and Norman Blake CD "Gallop to Georgia", you should get it. Norman doesn't take any leads on it, but it's...
  11. Re: March Mountain Boys featuring Mike Compton

Looking forward to this. Matt Flinner had a virtual jam today that was overwhelmed with attendees. He sent a link to people who have signed up for one of his classes. Everyone enjoyed it and really...

    Re: A new prototype mandolin

Really cool, Graham. IMHO, the tailpiece looks out of place though--needs something more modern to fit with the rest of the design.
  14. Re: Article: Remembering Jethro Burns on his 100th Birthday, an A

We have a Monroe Mandolin Camp. We need a Jethro Mandolin Camp. What do you say, Donnie?

What a wonderful tribute to Jethro! Had me spellbound.
  15. Re: D'Addario's new Chris Thile signature mandolin pick

I like the new pick a lot, but after playing awhile with a couple guitar players, I'm back to the BC Ct55. Sounds great playing solo at home though.
  16. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Look at a post 2007 Gibson scroll and a 1920s Gibson scroll. Northfield's scrolls are more correct than recent Gibsons. Gibson scrolls are way too open.

Re: The Heiden F Artist in the classifieds

This. Especially the setups (none better that I've found), and my Heiden A5 is definitely THE ONE. That F5 could make me change my mind.

And I have serious doubts the top is Sitka on the A5 in the...

    Re: D'Addrio picks?

I have to reshape the bevels on BC picks to try to get rid of the high end hash they add to the E strings. It's not there with any other pick I use. It's definitely the BC pick not the instruments. I...

    Re: Chris Thile's new pick

Mine arrived from Sweetwater today. First impression is quite favorable. Nice feel and good tone especially on the E strings where it doesn't add the high end hash that the BC picks seem to do for...
  22. Re: Wintergrass Vintage Instrument Showcase

Thanks, Evan. That 35 D-28 sounds like a monster guitar. John's Loar is as fine as it gets.

Re: OneMic Series- The David Grisman Quintet

That looks like an AEA R88 stereo ribbon mic and it captures the beautiful tones and performance from the Dawg and the band quite nicely. Quite the stereo image if you listen with headphones.

    Re: Chris Thile's new pick

My email from Sweetwater said my pick was shipped today. Interesting.

Haven't had a casein pick since the Compton Taterbug model from Red Bear. Can't find that one anywhere.
