I wish I didn't have to thank you for posting this. Stacy was an amazing player, author of many instructional methods for dobro and fiddle, and master transcriber among his many talents.
I don't know if this is too far or not, but the Fretted Instrument Workshop in Amherst, MA seems to have quite a collection of mandolins, and they've been very friendly when I was there.
It's basically the finish. The KM-272 has a "transparent amber" finish and the KM-276 has a "transparent brown finish". Saga's website shows the difference in finishes....

It sounds like you bought the wrong instrument for your needs. A custom builder will certainly build whatever you want, but it won't cost $300.
