  1. Re: Jazz guitar piece played on electric mandolin

Congratulations on being signed to Verve in the 1960s or 70s. :^)
Reminds me of the old joke "I just signed a record deal with Columbia.
They send me 11 LPs for a buck". That would be Columbia...

    Re: Setting pickup height?

This Google search mainly retrieves guitar humbucker height info. Extrapolate from there.
Gibson recommends 1/16" (1.6 mm) for the bridge pickup and 3/32" (2.4 mm) for the neck.

  3. Re: Emando players: What do you want in an amp?

Various jazz guitar humbucker pickups. My favorites are Bartolini and Bill Lawrence. Very different sound.

    Repertoire suggestions?

    Hi everyone.
I met a classical guitarist at a family gathering
and would like to work up music for next year.
We are amateur musicians - maybe "high intermediate"
    describes our level :^) I'm...
  8. Re: What's the weirdest MUSICAL thing you've ever done?

Strung up a 3 story building from basement to ceiling with aluminum wires for an
art school project. Through the stair well. Played it with a big home made bow strung
    with fishing line. It sounded...

Re: Transposing tunes composed for horns

That was a funny quote from Svend: "B major has five sharps and is a non-existent key in jazz".
What a great musician he was. I was friends with him.
Will send you a personal message here on...

Re: Transposing tunes composed for horns

Learning to play in F Bb Eb etc is a good idea. I have a couple of thoughts.
First, if you like swing music, Django and Stephane generally played in G C F and
associated minor keys. There's a lot...

    Re: Need some advice.

This probably goes against the prevailing opinions here.
You can play mandolin in an "oldies" pop band but its very hard to fit in rhythmically.
In my experience Bluegrass "chop" chords don't work...

    The Great Stalacpipe Organ
    Pyrophone Organ
    Hyperbass Flute
    Hornucopian dronepipe

  18. Re: Check this out: Dana Mohr Plays Huckleberry Hornpipe

I'm hearing a little of Frank Wakefield too, though they don't phrase the same.
His New Camptown Races has a nice chord solo. It starts after the guitar melody at 7:02
  19. Check this out: Dana Mohr Plays Huckleberry Hornpipe

This is from Howard Yearwood's "Saddleback" 1979 LP on Ridge Runner. Mohr seems
stylistically ahead of his time here, and plays a unique triplet-driven mandolin solo.
From what I remember he won...

How do you put the violin under your chin with a bow-tie on your neck?
I can't even play wearing a regular tie.
  24. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

I play 5 string electric mandolin BECAUSE it has an "electric guitar-like" sound. Its useful to be able to play that sound, [and it has its own tradition of fantastic playing: Tiny Moore, Johnny...

    Banjo Mandolin.
I actually won a first place "Banjo Other" category in a contest playing a choro piece.
The neck was warped like a cereal bowl ;) Its now detached so I'm not tempted to play it.
