  1. Re: Celebrating The Mandolin Pickers Guide to Bluegrass Improvisa

I just bought a (digital) copy - I'll let you know how it goes! I'm currently kind of in the middle of Sharon Gilchrist's intermediate course on Peghead Nation so I think this might be a good place...

    Re: Mandolin as carry on?

I fly a fair amount internationally and I've never had a problem with the mando as carryon. (My last trip, it was the mando in a hard case and a soprano ukulele in a gig bag bungeed together!) It...

    Re: Peace by Sarah Jarosz

New! and Improved! Whiter! Brighter! Longer-lasting!

...no, seriously, I cleaned up some of those transitions I missed on the first pass. Also here's the version I took it from:

    Peace by Sarah Jarosz

This is deceptively simple little instrumental that I like very much. It's also the first time I worked out a complete song on my own from listening/watching. It's not perfect, there are a couple of...

    Re: Picking faster?

(Progress update: just got neeeearly all the way thru Jerusalem Ridge at 150 bpm before falling apart completely. Yay me.)

    Re: Picking faster?

This thread came along at exactly the right time for me. I'd like to share what I've been doing that's helped my speed, and also ask for some advice.

I try to do about half an hour of just tremolo...

    This is not a brag...

...but I had to come share. I worked out a Sarah Jarosz break. It's from She Left Me Standing On The Mountain. I'm playing something that Sarah Jarosz played. Of course she recorded it when she was...
  10. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

I saw Sierra Hull play that Mandocaster at Grey Fox. I'd never seen an electric before and I couldn't figure out what the hell I was looking at. I had to get home and google until I found pictures.

Re: My First Festival - which one?

I answered my own question about upstate NY: Grey Fox. (Yes, Google is a thing!)

It looks way bigger than I was thinking of, but on the other hand it's a chance to see I'm With Her again. I see...

Re: My First Festival - which one?

My first stop is actually Hawai'i, so from there I can pretty much go anywhere on the mainland. I know that isn't much help to narrow it down. :-)

I do have an internet-never-met-f2f friend in...

My First Festival - which one?

So, I haven't been playing all that long and because I live under a rock in the Middle East I've only recently learned of what a cool community exists around bluegrass and roots music. I want to come...
  14. Re: What do you recommend for a second mandolin?

It is a hex wrench but it looks pretty large for what I thought the truss rod adjuster would be. (I haven't yet taken off the cover to check.) It looks like, maybe, 3/8 inch?
  15. Re: What do you recommend for a second mandolin?

Holy carp, you guys! Look what I have!

My family arrived from the USA and brought my new Kentucky KM-252 with them. Of course I had to pretend I wanted to spend time with them (j/k) and...
  16. Re: What do you recommend for a second mandolin?

colorado_al, I think you read my mind. I was admiring the 252 and trying to convince myself that the color and the radiused fretboard would be worth the extra money.

So I jumped. :) In addition to...
  17. Re: What do you recommend for a second mandolin?

Jeff is right, anything over $100 value I have to pay duty on, and leaving expense aside our Customs bureaucracy puts even the old Ottoman Empire to shame - too much stuff just vanishes into a...
  18. Re: What do you recommend for a second mandolin?

I'm in MENA, so shipping is nontrivial (and usually involves having someone bring it from the states as luggage to avoid ruinous customs duties).
  19. Re: What do you recommend for a second mandolin?

This page on Amazon has a KM 150 "All Solid" for $250 and "Solid Top" for, like, 13 bucks more. I would've thought all solid would be more desireable thus more expensive not less. Am I wrong or is...
  20. What do you recommend for a second mandolin?

Hi everyone, long-time listener, first-time caller. I've been learning mandolin for about a year on my first instrument, a Fender FM 52E. And it's been fine for an absolute beginner but really, I...
