    Re: Five String Madness

I had taken a break from the five course and have recently come back to it. I have two projects I am now working on:

One: I have resumed learning how to read alto clef. I would like to be a strong...
  2. Re: Open right hand to closed fist transition help

The more limiting thing may be the pinky planting, more than the open hand.

Re: Pretty odd, not so pretty

If Bill Monroe had seen a reverse scroll Regal in that barbershop window, we would be idolizing them, and making fun of an F5 headstock looking like the silhouette of a big nosed guy with a cowlick. ...

Re: A Pearl of Great Price A-4

My thoughts are that it is important to figure out whether you are dissatisfied or bored. I don't mean to be glib. I found that a new addition to my herd renews interest in the ones I have had for a...

Re: Strategies for learning without teachers?

My dad used to say that you cannot teach anyone anything. That the most you can hope to do is make them uncomfortable with their ignorance.

There are so many resources today, with books, and...
  7. Re: The merciless camera (recording ourselves as a reality check)

I record myself as a way of simulating performance anxiety when practicing something i am going to have to perform.

I avoid being caught in a video.

Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

Learning to play by ear, learning to read tabs, learning to read notation, ... its what ever you don't do that is detrimental to really learning.

  10. Re: Campanella, Red Diamond, Northfield, Collings experience

I was at a truck show where folks gather and talk truck. And a friend of mine was lauding the advantages of a farm show in that you stand around and talk farming without actually having to do any.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

I meant here in this thread. :)

I thought a lot of bandolims were arch top but you are right, I can't find a single picture of an arch top bandolim.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

You know you have a point. The flatty is under-represented here as a choice. Hate to think the whole world is either an F arch top or an A arch top.
  14. Re: If money was no object, and perfect bluegrass tone was only g

I have doubts as well. I don't believe that the higher cost is due to the extra work required.

I think the higher cost is due to it being a different market, where people are willing to pay more,...

Re: We've said it before, we'll say it again.

I sometimes wish there were more choices than buy it or don't buy it. Sometimes I really really like a mandolin that I am testing in a music store, and really love that it exists, but I don't need to...

Re: We've said it before, we'll say it again.

I have had the experience of going into a well stocked music store and trying out several mandolins and finding nothing there I would prefer over what I have. And in many cases it wasn't due to...

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

I think that there is nothing inherent in the F style body that makes it harder to hold comfortably. As to the beauty of the design, I agree, but as i described, it took a some experience and context...

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

I don't find the F style body any harder to hold, in general, than any other mandolin. I play sitting down, and I find the placement of the point and curl on the treble side really help keeping the...

Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

    Absolutely!

The "complete musician" does it all, and whatever you don't do subtracts from what you can do.

Re: Discovering the fun of GDGD tuning

I have one mandolin I keep in GDGD, or right now I think its in AEAE. Same thing really. That way the the standard tuned mandolin does not need to be retuned and stressed, and the cross mandolin can...
