Re: Cost of sending a mandolin from US to EU?

    Mark,

But how much did the recipient have to pay at the UK end to get it released?
That is what really adds to the costs for anything over 135 ( I think) in value. The actual freight is trivial...

Re: Cost of sending a mandolin from US to EU?

General rule of thumb is that, after VAT and duty, freight and clearance costs, importing an instrument from USA to EU or UK will cost 30-50% more than the USA price. More often 50%.

    For a price...

Re: What style am I hearing in my head?

Of course "l'Indifference" is in Sheri's book and somebody has already posted a mandolin version, but it would be a shame if anyone missed Carlo Aonzo's version:

Re: Single Note Melody - Is mandolin "easier?"

    Me neither.
A lot of widely-played tunes become cliched and fall into disfavour, but you only need to hear someone playing it well once to suddenly hear it with fresh ears.
  7. Re: Do you take your best or most valuable mandolin to gigs?

i use my best one, not just for gigs but for pub sessions where all sorts of mayhem can happen.
It's not my most expensive, it was only a few hundred quid, but it's irreplaceable, so is most...

Re: What style am I hearing in my head?

Has anybody mentioned Sheri Mignano's fantastic contributions to this site yet?
    Her user handle is Mandophile.

I can recommend her pdf books , in your case particularly "French Soiree" which is...
  9. Re: Nice group of top shelf instruments in classifieds today

I got a bottle of whisky and will dream on.

Many years ago I bumped into Stephen Gilchrist at Melbourne airport and naively asked if he had any spare mandolins for sale.

    I think he said...

Re: Single Note Melody - Is mandolin "easier?"

Irish Washerwoman is a fine tune that has lasted for generations.
    Fits well into dance sets.

I do remember it being used in Warner Bros cartoons etc of the 1930s-50s to signify "Irish...
  11. Re: David Crosby comments on tuning in Fretboard Journal

I agree to the extent that an electronic tuner on a mandolin only gets you in the right neighbourhood.
Then you have to sweeten it with your ears.

    Re: John Lennon - Mandolinist?!?

He picked up so many different instruments in the Get Back series, once they got into the new Apple studio.
Various guitars, a new lap steel that arrived in a box, another lap steel or dobro.

    Re: Eastman 305 string preference?

I would say more even across the strings, which gives you a smoother, jazzier sound, and less wear on your fingertips.
Less callous too, which may not be desirable.
For a couple of years I would...

Re: Playing chords alongside traditional tunes

Most trad sessions will give you a respectful listen if you're a visitor and play a tune they don't know.
