Re: E string choking on higer frets

I have friends who play every night in front of their fireplace. All there instruments have cracks in the tops. Raise your bridge a little till it's not so dry.

Re: This isn't right is it?

When I bought a mandolin years ago from a builder he called and asked how I liked it. I told him I lower the action by about half, he said "really I set it up extra low for you". Personal preference...

Re: E string choking on higer frets

Don't know where you live, but if you live in an area where it is cold and you have heat running to keep warm your instrument may have dried out and the action lowered. Check your string height at...

Re: This isn't right is it?

That shop doesn't know setup!! What is the string height above the 12th fret----12th fret to bottom of string? Some like 1/16" on both strings, I like 1/32" on the E and 3/64" or under on the G. This...

Re: This isn't right is it?

It's poor action, your fingers don't have callouses, but you should be able to play chords for a while before being painful. You could put lighter strings on and that will help too.

Re: This isn't right is it?

Yes refit the bridge. If you don't know how get Rob Meldrum's (mandolincafe.com/forum/threads/143935-Mandolin-setup-rob-meldrum) info right here on the cafe. I like the side to side method.

    You...

    Re: Here's a Doozy....

It's not worth it for Elderly to fix this and sell it. The repair would add too much for what this would sell for. It's difficult if not impossible to glue a brace in an ff hole mandolin thru the ff...

    Re: Rubner Tuners

It's possible to fit the a regular tuner in an old Gibson, some easier than others, so I would say you might be able to to it. Look for the posts angling instead of being staight. If they were the...

    Re: Rubner Tuners

Jim, with such a small difference in the measurement try measuring from the edge of one tuner to the edge of another. It is hard to find exact center.

    Re: Rubner Tuners

I don't know why Hans would use a different spacing on some mandolins than others. He was making mandolins before the Golden Age were available and I wouldn't think he would change for a few...

Jim, yes the Golden Age tuner come in two spacings. The Rubners should fit your Brentrup just fine, I have them on my Brentrup.

    Re: Is it worth repairing?

I would glue original braces with HHG. I would not make the block bigger, but brace under the broken area for more support. Gluing may be enough, but a brace wouldn't hurt. Kerfing is easy to make, I...

Re: Heat gun in steel pipe?

Bob is correct on this. You will need to burn the galvanizing off before using the pipe, preferably outside.

    Re: Uneven frets...done deliberately??

I am with rcc56, when I refretted my mandolin I used larger wire and only went to the 15th fret. I don't play past the 15th fret so no big deal. It also will let a future owner know what the original...
  17. Re: Duff A style mandolins, like to hear owner thoughts, some ?

Sound is where it's at. If the sound is right for your ear, the playability is easily adjusted. I have made several instruments more comfortable for me.

    Re: Calhoun case?

I contacted TDK about making cases and there is a 25 case minimum. Shouldn't be too much for Northfield to make a case for the Calhoun.
  19. Re: Duff A style mandolins, like to hear owner thoughts, some ?

Daryl, it would be cheaper to have the Duff fingerboard planed flat and refretted than to spend the extra grand for the other one. Plus shipping both ways. Just a thought.

Re: Internal vs external K& K piezo

As Nevin says internal is more out of the way and protected. When I do an internal it is glued in, external is not glued on the top. The sound transference when glued is much stronger than other...

If the nut height is ok, but the slots are binding the fix is simple, no special tools needed. Use a round file, chain saw file will work, and file the top part of the slot wider leaving the bottom...

    Re: Good pick for starters

The right pick is the one you like the sound of. I played with a .73 guitar pick, using the shoulder, for many years. Still use one on that mandolin. Nothing is right or wrong, the only right is the...
  25. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

If you have a piezo and not a preamp in your mandolin the added pickup, as Ray says, is the same technology as it was decades ago. Some sizing and thickness differences, but the same technology. I...
