Re: Like this site but for guitar....

TDPRI is a great one. Lots of good stuff, even for non-Tele players.

TalkBass is decent, if you're a bass player. Those two and the Cafe are my only music-chat sites.

    Re: Mandolin Orange Information

Still don't know how to get one of these. Saw the listing on Amazon and it is definitely not one that I've seen. Please update this thread if you find one. I'll try to get some info as well.

    Re: Thor's Hammer, many thanks

'Ella' was the personal (A style) mandolin of the late luthier John Sullivan, who named all of the mandolins he made. You can hear her on the most recent album from Mandolin Orange 'Tides Of A...

    Re: Siminoff Straight Up Strings

They made my Bitterroot sing. For the right instrument, they are killer.

Re: Opinion on nickel vs. gold aesthetics

I don't wear gold jewelry and neither do any of my instruments. This works well for us.

Re: Mandolin Orange on today Show

Finally able to watch the clip from the Today show.

First thought: "Gawd, they reverb'd the sh** out of that..."
Second thought: "that Gil sounds just as righteous as the Loar"
    Third thought:...

Re: Mandolin Orange on today Show

According to his IG, it's a "new" old Gil ('84)

Guess that settles the old question about whether MAS ends with a Loar.....
  13. Re: What does a mando set-up cost in your area?

The two best shops in Portland charge $75 and $80 for a mando setup. This does not include fretwork.

    Re: Andrew Marlin's Pick

He's had that Loar about 6 months or so. They deserve each other.
  15. Re: Tip: Replacing Book Bindings with Spiral Bindings

This is a great idea. I have a Beatles Chord book that never stays open. Are there size/thickness limits?

    Re: Is my MAS dead?

My MAS was beaten into submission when the box arrived from Ohio with my Kimble A inside. I now have the perfect kid brother for my Northfield F5S. I don't even cruise the Classifieds anymore.

    Re: Andrew Marlin's Pick

Coming from guitar/bass, I started playing mandolin with a guitar pick. I soon got into the Traveling Pick Sampler here and that really opened my ears as to how much difference in tone the pick...

    Re: Will Kimble mandolins are....

    Re: Looking for beginner mandolin.

Your experience with guitar will mean that your ear is already accustomed to good tone. A similar quality mando costs roughly twice as much as a guitar.

Let your ears guide you to the highest...

Re: Kentucky KM-1050 vs Northfield F5S

PM me next time you are heading up. Most Saturdays through the winter there are Taborgrass sessions, and that's a good chance to get to hear a few different mandos.

I would suggest taking a day...
