Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

My Duff A-5 was one of the best sounding mandolins I've ever owned or played. Unfortunately, I got scroll envy and sold it. But fortunately I got a Duff F-5 which sounded about the same. (But had...

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

I can tell one difference between Nickel-Silver, EVO, and Stainless Steel:

Nickel-Silver frets last (ham-handed) me about 1-3 years between dressings or refrets,
EVO frets last me over 8...

Re: We don't need no steenking flat picks!

I remember some years ago, I sat on the front row and watched Wayne pull out a mandolin and pick a few fiddle tunes on it using finger picks. When he finished, he handed the mandolin down to me,...

  6. Re: anyone change their plain steel high strings faster than wrap

I used to change the unwound strings early because my fingers seemed to make them rust or at least get much less smooth within a few weeks. Didn't happen on the wounds as much. Lately my chemistry...

I usually use Tru-oil as described by mikeyb2 above,
but just for interest I'll describe a method that Mr Dudenbostel showed me several years ago that has done quite well for me, especially if...

Re: Having trouble picking in public

I agree with most of the above, but maybe this is a more structured approach to fearing that you'll screw up a tune or break:

Instead of learning tunes exactly note for note from start to finish...

Re: Odd problem with treble pairs

I'd check to see if the E & A strings are actually leaving the very front edge of the saddle. If one slot has a tiny hump in it, then the strings in a pair could have a tiny difference in scale...

A slightly different approach might be to stop practicing the tune you're working on and instead, play some chords to accompany yourself singing a song that you like.

Then find a new way to finger...

You mention in "3." that "They're large, but...."

If you like a slightly smaller pick, the Primetone triangles also come in a 'small' size, which I like a lot.

    Re: Common Chord shapes

Like many, I use the chop chord pattern a lot:

    A: 9-7-4-5
    Am: 9-7-3-5
F#m (relative minor of A): 6-4-4-x which is actually just a 1-5 'power chord' which can be used as a minor or a major...
