    Re: 1923 A4 Gibson Value

The store owner said the crack was very shallow and not all the way through. From my cursory observation I would say he's right. Not positive though.

Timbofood it's on consignment so the music...

    1923 A4 Gibson Value

Generally speaking I'm not that interested in vintage mandolins, preferring contemporary builders. So I ran across a 1923 A4 Gibson in the local music shop today. Looks in good shape but with plain...

Re: Sarah Jarosz playing a Nugget Mandolin

Jim my Nugget resided in your neck of the woods, that being Boulder, until I bought myself a retirement present a while back. I’ll be bringing it closer to home again when my wife and I move to...

Re: Sarah Jarosz playing a Nugget Mandolin

I have an Eldora Nugget built in 1979 and the neck is rounded and not big at all. Has a flat fretboard. Great feel to it. Very easy playing.

    Re: What's In Your Mind

JeffD, you may have hit on some helpful ideas. When I say "muscle memory" what I mean is the ability to play a tune somewhat automatically. I can trust myself to play the correct notes without...

    Re: What's In Your Mind

With fear that this comment may start a diversionary topic, I liken my playing to golf. I always play golf best when starting out each spring. The further into the season the worse the play is. ...

    Re: What's In Your Mind

I'm not talking about playing mindlessly. However if I'm thinking about Part B of a Monroe tune, and how hard it will be while I'm still playing Part A, then it's more of a distraction I would say. ...

    Re: What's In Your Mind

[QUOTE=Gunnar;1736154] if I hit it at speed without thinking about it I can usually play it right, but if I think about it I mess up.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. There's a desire for...

    What's In Your Mind

How much thinking while playing? The goal of learning tunes is to create "muscle memory", while clearing the mind of other thoughts. Sometimes that works but not always. For a tune I've been...
  11. Re: Hypothetical high dollar mando purchase question...

Not advocating that you buy a Nugget or any particular make; that's your decision. I retired last June. However 18 months earlier I fulfilled my life long mandolin retirement dream of finding and...

    Re: General Mandolin Post

2TonCommon, like others, thank you for your comments.
It strikes me that we often spend more time worrying over chips, scratches, dings, the expenses of our instruments, how many we own, when we...

Re: New 2nd generation Coombe flat top

Peter, very handsome new build. I've always loved the simple, yet elegant shape of a Style C, and it makes me--an uneducated bystander--wonder if there isn't much more intended by that shape than...

    Re: Round core mandolin strings?

Just to partially illustrate the differences take a look at the description for TI Plectrum Guitar Strings. There are 3 variations in string assembly. I haven't seen a mention of the core shape but...

    Re: Round core mandolin strings?

I was going to post a similar question as the OP but then saw this thread having already begun. So my question is, I'm wondering if any mfr. makes either monel or nickel wound strings around a...

I agree with Don and thanks so much for this . What is the venue where they are playing. I've seen other videos there. It looks almost like a house concert.

    Joe K Walsh

Since there's no category for "gossip" here on the Cafe I'm using this one. I've been taking Joe K's lessons on Peghead for a year or so and while viewing the latest one I noticed a wedding band on...

    Re: About my pick grip

[QUOTE=Tom Wright;1714793]I have noticed pretty much all guitar players I see use a fairly open hand shape. It is likely due to the fact they are jazz or other electric guitar players.

    I, too...

    Re: About my pick grip

You know it's funny. When I "mime" holding a pick my last 3 fingers naturally fold back into my palm, as if ready to form a fist. But with mandolin in hand it seems more challenging to keep that...

    About my pick grip

As I often do, I evaluate and re-evaluate my right hand pick grip. When watching many good players, and how they hold their picks, they have their picking hand fingers tucked in a loose fist. When...
