    Re: Case for mandocaster

Oh mate, don't get me started on DHL!

I ordered a Gear4Music Double Neck back at the first of July, shipped DHL from the UK. Should have taken about a week, aye? Bloody thing took near on a month,...

    Re: Case for mandocaster

Would like to see the results of this, as I'm seriously contemplating buying one of the Harley Benton Mandocaster knockoffs, and a hardcase would not go amiss.
  3. Re: Do any companies make bowlback mandolins and banjolins anymor

I will grant that with the Suzukis, if you can play on 'em before buying, it's a good idea. Kind of like buying a Gibson guitar made between 1985 and well... Now-ish. QC is a bit all over the place....

Re: Strings for Nerve Damaged Hands

First off, sorry for the delay in reply. Been a rough week here at Casa De Solus. Due to the 'Rona, have not been able to go out to get new strings yet, broke the ones I've got on my mandolin...

Re: Strings for Nerve Damaged Hands

I don't think I'd go so far as to replace the nut and saddle. At that point, seems to me an 8 string guitar would be better suited for the task. /shrug

I just like to faff about with things, try...

Re: Strings for Nerve Damaged Hands

So what I'm seeing from all of it, basically if you're going to do split tunings, it should essentially turn the open strum into a chord.

I'll have to experiment if/when my strings get here (I'm...

Re: Strings for Nerve Damaged Hands

Alright, so. Basically decided on ordering Ultralights after looking at string tensions. It'll save me nearly a kilo of tension on the high strings. That's quite a bit. In addition, I'm looking at...

Re: Reverb announces increase in fees

I get better service on Reverb than I do on eBay, and so far better service than from some of the big-box shops. I'm yet to have a complaint, plus the level of buyer and seller protection they offer...

Re: Strings for Nerve Damaged Hands

10s are currently on it, it's set up as low as it can be without any buzz, and the fretwork is pretty decent for the age of the instrument. As I said, I'm likely going to try the Silk and Steel...

Re: Strings for Nerve Damaged Hands

I really don't have to worry about volume on my mandolin. It's a Kiso-Suzuki MR-150, and that thing is LOUD. It's a bowlback, and I'm yet to find an acoustic that matches its natural projection,...

    Strings for Nerve Damaged Hands

So here's what's up: About a few months ago, I ended up with some not insignificant nerve damage in my hands/arms/neck from my dayjob. The kind that makes playing a stringed instrument pretty...
  15. Re: Do any companies make bowlback mandolins and banjolins anymor

What my da did was take a bit of shoelace and around the headstock under the strings above the nut, and then at the tailpiece where that fancy scrollwork is he ties it *very lightly off* there. It'll...

    Re: Describe your MAS progression

So I grew up with a Kiso-Suzuki bowlback in the house (model MR-150). I played around on some Fender F-styles, and growing up I always thought I'd play an F. The curves of it just appealed to me.

  18. Re: Do any companies make bowlback mandolins and banjolins anymor

So I don't know how you'd feel about the style of the Kiso-Suzuki bowlbacks, but they're solid as a rock. My da's own one as far back as I can remember, it's traveled 'round the world (twice) to some...
