Re: "Clear Skies" new Mandocello Quartet

Lovely composition and great sound from those instruments, Jim. So clear across the whole range and so much great sustain. A majestic sound!
  2. Re: Krönungsintraden I. by J. I. Linek for tenor guitar

Fine playing and a great tone from your tenor, Ondrej. I can just imagine this compostion being performedon brass and timpani; there is a regal quality to it.

Re: post a video of yourself

Great-sounding instrument and fine playing and video.
  4. Re: Confusing stuff in Mel Bay "Fun with Strums" book

I too would go with John's and Ed's suggestions, Sue. A single bass note at the start of each bar would give you a picking pattern a bit like the backing guitarist might play using alternating...
  5. Poll: Re: Poll for Song A Week Social Group Week #535

The slow air! One genre where the metronome should certainly be locked securely in the drawer before you start, I believe. The advantage of our Scottish slow airs, especially the ones from the...
  6. Poll: Re: Poll for Song A Week Social Group Week #535

I have commented on how I managed it over on the SAW group, Mike. Set metronome at 94 and in 3/4 time and recorded melody, then added backing tracks with metronome turned off.

    Re: Chambered body, electric mandolin

Gary, I loved your shooting board. The tutors at Anniesland College back in 2003/4, Paul, Bill and Michael, had us making and using a shooting board, and I still use mine to this day. Our preferred...

    Re: Very strange intonation

"Cheap" instruments, and dearer ones too, regularly have the nut slots left higher than needed when they leave the makers, working on the assumption that it is easier to lower a slot than to try to...

Re: Is my new mando trash?

Just a quick thought, Lee. Is it a new or used instrument? Have you tried changing the strings? Even on a new instrument it can be in store for a long time and the strings could be past their...

    Re: My latest oud

Another fine creation, Jo. Do you use violin pegs, or do you make your pegs individually by hand?

    Re: Wet Tuning?

Nice one, Brian. I often hear it in pub sessions as the evening progresses and temperature and humidity change as the evening goes on. We call it "Pub Tuning"!

    Seriously, Scottish and French...

Maybe a mass descent on Achiltibuie and Springwell, Kevin? I still remember fondly that Friday evening session a few years ago in your kitchen there during the Summer Isles Festival. I was lucky...

Re: Tuning issues - Octave Mandolin

You should check the position of your bridge if you are getting the problems you are having. The aim is to get the fretted octave note (at 12th fret) in pitch with the same note played as a...
